High mileage 5gs... what problems are you starting to see, if any? v.whatever

I'll start with my lude.

1997 SH
114,000 miles

Major:
- just completed an engine swap done due to a mechanic's error, no fault of the lude @114k

Maintenance:
- timing belt, water pump, etc. @90k
- brakes @90k
- clutch @90k

Wear and Tear Replacements:
- rear wheel bearings (preventitively, so doesn't really count)
- O2 sensors, both primary and secondary @100k (since then, Honda now covers anything emissions-related under full warranty)
- replaced the dash bulb illuminating left side of A/C buttons @105k
- sunroof rattle @ 112k
- front lower balljoints (even after recall was done; @80k for recall, now again @114k)
- front upper balljoints (need to repalce whole upper control arm) @114k
- distributor @114k, CEL code 9, bad CYP (cylinder position sensor)

COMMON PROBLEMS (to be constantly updated):
- auto timing belt tensioner failure
- SS transmission failure
- 5th gear grind (manual trans)
- sunroof rattle
- worn distributor bearings
- O2 sensor failure
- rear wheel well rust
- rear shock knock
- easily broken headlight mounting tabs

1999 base 5-speed. bought new in 99'

now has 170k

auto tensioner started making noises around 40k. dealer finally figured it out and changed it along with belts, water pump around 75k.

original brakes replaced at 140k

right rear caliper seized around 150k

replaced rear shock collars (forget how long ago) it did away with a lot of the shock knock.

squeak every now and then out of the driver's seat.

car is in the shop right now having timing belt service done. as well as the clutch (original clutch).

rear main seal started to leak around 150k

cam seal started to leak around 140k.

my mirrors are just now finally becoming a little pinkish.

windows are getting kinda slow going up and down but they have always been slow compared to other cars.

sometimes the drivers side door lock (inside) doesn't ant to lock. a couple dash lights (speedo) flicker on and off. not sure if this is related. haven't really messed with it yet. i thought the dash lights might have something to do with my dimmer switch, it no longer lights up. when i turn the brightness up is when i have the problem. if i keep it dim they do not flicker. door locks act up when it has been parked in the sun and/or days over 70 degrees. this just started in the last few months.

that is about it.

'97 SH with 150K miles on it.

Other than the scheduled maintenance:
three bent rims thanks to NJ potholes
struts, clutch, and flywheel replaced @ 120K (first owner abused clutch)
Passenger side low beam light socket tabs broke
Sunroof rattles
paint on roof, trunk, spoiler faded...the car is NOT garaged
Driver side door doesn't always lock when power lock is pushed (key is not in the ignition)

That's about it. Not too bad considering she's 10 years old...and far better than my old Ranger or big Bronco did.

Check power steering. Make sure front suspension components are torqued to spec. tie rods, etc

Buy new shocks, they usually last 60k miles

Maintenance, new plugs, wires, distr cap and rotor, clean EGR, replace old sensors, replace/ clean air filter

Timing belt and tensioner most likely needs to be replaced

Check clutch fluid, bleed if needed, replace clutch

Buy new brakes pads, they are $40 - $60, change brake fluid

98 Prelude Sportshift, purchased w 101k in 2003

Now has just under 160k:

In cold temps, tranny shifts very rough even when car is warmed up, just replaced ATF w Amsoil synthetic, no improvement

Also in winter, steering makes a loud creaking noise on bumpy turns such as leaving driveway, fluid level is just fine

I also have a rear passenger side caliper sieze, replacement soon to follow

Paint bubbling rust spot seen under right rear wheelwell

Paint is pinkish on vertical surfaces

Paint chipped away on rubberized window moldings on the doors

Minor stuff, everything else is holding up remarkably well, interior looks new still, everything still works.

1999 w/ 152k Besides routine maint & consumable items the only things I've had to fix is:
replace cheap intake cam seal/cover
clean out EGR ports in Intake Mani
clutch slave & master cyl
the relay that controls the cig lighter broke. But I could have helped kill that. I was using one of those cig lighter powered air compressors often (for autocrossing)

**knocks on wood**

oh... and the constant burning/leaking of oil. Both my front and rear main seals are seeping. And the top of the trans is covered in oil & dirt from the shifter linkage seals leaking (could also have been from the cam seal)

just what it says--lifetime warranty on anything emissions related, including o2 sensors and cat.

Hey, so anyone with the seized rear calipers... do they have to be replaced or can they just be rebuilt?

White smoke or black?

I think most people are surprised by the oil usage. But if you vtec a lot, that would definately kill you oil. Just keep it topped off.

If you havent already, do a compression check to be sure, but I bet you are fine.

166k on mine.

Other than burning a lot of oil, and then burning some more oil, the only thing that's officially "broken" on my car was the ABS modulator @ 140k. Swapped in a $50 junkyard one in about 30 minutes, and good to go.

Everything else that's gone "wrong" has either been standard maintenance (timing belt, clutch, battery, etc.) or user error . . . for example, I've gone through 3 different wheel bearings as a result of cheap-ass winter rims that I can't find hubcentric rings for. I also wear through cv joints - lowered car & driving through bad winters & rough dirt roads.

But it does burn a lot of oil. Did I mention it burns oil? Oh yeah, and it burns oil.

yeah the only thing that actually BROKE on my car (not without giving me plenty of warning though) was the clutch slave and the battery

I had enough time to get both fixed before they crapped out, I was just too lazy/busy

jeepers, after reading some of these posts... my lude is doing pretty well with 147K
most of my trips now are very short... so lude isnt facing real wear&tear, except for the real pushing it on the highway.

To the point that I want to bring it in... just for a safetly check of everything before something cracks. Im due for a coolant flush... just because I think I should.
the annoying creaking sounds are coming back because of the cold weather.
I still have my illumina suspension sitting in the garage.

151k here on my Prelude, it's a '00.

The only problem it's had so far is the EGR valve sticking shut (that I still need to have fixed).

Wear items:
Discovered a front strut was blown when I put coilovers on
Tires
Rear wheel bearings (replaced when I bought the car with 106k on it)

Wear items coming soon:
More tires
Brake pads
Clutch (still on the original!)
Paint (lots of rock chips - thanks, VA drivers)

120K on my 2000 Base

Got the car in May 2002 with 18,963 miles on it.

Sometime before 90k:
-Bottom of trunk where the donut sits started filling up with water and eventually rusted the whole bottom out. Water even leaked into the back seat. I think Honda f*cked up after fixing my car when I was hit by a Dodge Ram.

At 90K:
-timing belt, water pump, etc...
-check engine light.....random misfires at idle
-Cat had to be replaced
-Distributor had to be replaced

This is what I'm about to do at 120k

-new brake pads.....first time since I got the car
-new clutch & flywheel......not needed but doing anyway
-full engine rebuild.....piston rings are shot.....compression is 210,110,200,105
-driver side rear sway bar bracket needs to be welded on, chassis rusted and the bolts just came right out
-open up headlamps and clean them out...they're all fogged up
