here we go again... SS trans died.

wonderful night:
doing 70mph on the highway... drop down to 3rd to floor it... go up to about 85ish... no where near the rev limiter.... shift back up to 4th...the whole car lerches forward... ok... I am going to admit that this has happened a few other times... shifting up to 4th from 3rd... and the car would shake... like it was some kinda monstorous 400HP beast....
so a few miles later.. Im exiting off the highway... I get to the light.. the car is stopped...when... the car learches forward... I think it stalled.... I lower the radio.. engine is still on... I blip the gas...the car doesnt move... I look down and I am out of SS-mode...just in drive. wtf.... I move into neutral... and the car.. moves forward... like no problem.... I turn down a hill.... and the car is driving fairly normal... but I am looking down and I am neutral. .... I get another hill.. going up hill... run out of power... as in the car didnt have enough power to get up the hill.... bleh.
towed to the mechanic... who did the first trans replacement... and the later torque convertor replacement.

so 40,000 miles and the trans is dead or just the torque convertor is dead again. I love my lude.... but its starting to get $$$.

Mechanic choked, when I asked for the number for the place in Cali, that my trans originally came from... on the first rebuild... which... made it to till the warranty nearly ended thats when the tork convertor went.... which was replaced or fixed... which brings me to now... and maybe 27K in mileage since that fix. Im not getting any kinda deal from the mechanic... $2800 or something... Ill figure somethin out... might have to put the lude in storage or something.
sucks.

Didn't Honda extend the factory warranty on the SS ludes for 99-01 to ten years or 150K?

Sorry to hear bro, getting mine changed today. But Artifex is right, driving the lude like that in SS mode will definitely kill the tranny.

Yeah man, you can't trat the SS's like that, your asking for failure. I really hope that guy realizes your position and gives you a break man, prelude in storage sounds sad....I figure one of these days we're gonna start hearing of "barn-finds", only instead of finding 1970 RA GTO's, they're gonna be preludes.....

Good luck.

I normally let the car downshift itself. If I do it myself, I do it at slow speeds. Btw I took out the tranny today and it is a bi*@#

according to the manual I down shifted within its limits... its not like I was doing 85 and then downshifted... to be nearly an eyblink away from redline. Its a sportscar... after all... so yea I downshifted that biznatch.. from 4th to 3rd.
169,000 or close to that.

I have one shadytree mechanic that I know who is willing to do the work... Im calling honda tomorrow to hear the assrape on the phone... 1 place in atlanta that will do it for barter...(speedy transmissions) but I am reluctant to take it to a place like that and so far away to save some $... since hearing all the horror stories about the honda's trans being so damn sophisticated that those places cant handle it. final choice is a place I saw thats a honda specialist.. but I have zero references from them... so they might suck as well.

Im not going to do a manual swap... I would just buy another prelude if that was my option on that.

So Im thinking... eat the money.. and get the pros at honda to do it. What you guys think?

( if you got less then 200 posts, or not in off-topic access ... eat a dick.)

^Thats a tough choice man. Personally, I'd shop for another lude if I wanted a lude that bad. But I'm not sure how you feel about that.

The way I've always looked at it, is...That's a lot of money to spend on a car that you know, every mile you drive is a mile closer to less money in your wallet, a ****ed up car, and you pissed off without a ride...again.
I really don't see the point in replacing a broken auto tranny in a lude, seems a little pointless...I don't care what you call the people at honda(Pro's you say), but no matter how good they are, the trans WILL fail...eventually.

Good luck whatever way you go.

all mechanical devices fail, its just a matter of time, and for the SS time is not on our side.

some minor good news... if you want to call it that. I guess that all the tranny shops know how ****ty the transmission is in the prelude.... or my original mechanic raped the wholesale price quote for max profit. Got quoted retail: $1800 with 1 year warranty, $1900 for 2year, $2000 for 3 year. Looking at my old receipt... I paid $2452 just for the trans and neccessary supplies and fluid... not including labor. I plan on calling back with my tax id from my LLC to see what the wholesale cost is... I got a quote of $480 for labor... removal and install.

meh. still sucks.

You didn't know it was a failbox that hates to be "manually" shifted?

The SS is too slow to be a sports car.

I have always thought that if you're smart enough to navigate yourself to this site, Then you should have already learned that the SS's are failures waiting to happen? I'm not saying you should know on your own, but you should have learned through research.

I Don't think any car with a stock Auto is a sports car. Not to mention, it depends on the requirements of the sport. AutoX probably needs a stick, however, if you look at almost ANY serious, professional drag racing, you will almost never see a stick, all of the high horse drag cars use Highly tuned(hence why I sadi any car with a stock auto) auto trans.

However, I can't count the number of threads I've read where everyone was at a loss for words when asked about modifying the SS.
