Help with upgrading?

I have been having some issues with my 2000 2.2 Vtec SH I posted a thread about it. I found a rebuild kit on ebay for $300, it includes:

*
Full Gasket set
+ Multi-layered steel head gasket
+ Intake manifold gasket
+ Exhaust manifold gasket
+ Valve cover gasket
+ Viton valve stem seals
+ Camshaft front
+ O-rings
+ Front seal gasket
+ Rear seal gasket
+ Water pump gasket
+ Timing cover gasket
+ Other Small Gaskets
*
Oil Pump (with Sensor)
*
Water Pump
*
Timing Belt Kit
+ Timing Belt
+ Balance Shaft Belt
+ Tensioner (made in Japan)
+ Idler (made in Japan)
*
Pistons with Complete NPR Ring Set (made in Japan)
+ Pistons (We have Standard and oversizes: .50mm = .020" )
+ Complete Ring Set (We have Standard and oversizes: .50mm = .020" )
+ Pins

Compression Ratio: 10:1
Standard Diameter: 87.00 mm
1st Group: 1.20 mm
2nd Group: 1.20 mm
Oil Ring: 2.80 mm

*
Engine Bearings (Either from ACL or King)
+ Main Bearing Set (We have Standard and oversizes: .25mm = .010" or .50mm = .020")
+ Rod Bearing Set (We have Standard and oversizes: .25mm = .010" or .50mm = .020")
+ Thrush Washer

Is it worth it considering the problems I'm having now which would be black smoke, catalyst efficiency code and massive oil loss internally, bad gas mileage. Or should I just diagnose the problem, fix it and only worry about upgrading the motor? The car has 62,XXX miles on it. Either way I plan to upgrade it eventually so can anyone give me any advice as to what order I can do things in before it's ready for a turbo. Right now the only upgrades it has is a cold air intake, high flow muffler, strut brace, 18'' rims, coil overs (not sure if they're adjustable). Any advice as to what I should do would be cool, also any links to cheap but good quality sites.

Most likely, you just need a tune and a tuneup.

For $300 bucks that is definitely not a bad way to go. Rebuilding your engine now will save you some trouble down the road. My advice, if you are having a shop do the rebuild, I'd ask if you can sit in on them doing the rebuild - you will learn a ton about your engine that way. Either way, good luck and let us know how it goes for ya

Definately sounds like major internal damage if your burning massive oil and clogging up your cat. A replacement engine can be found for about $1200-1800 and swapped in for considerbaly less effort than a rebuild but this could also be the opportunity to learn about engine building if you can afford more downtime and your cylinder walls and head havent been damaged to severley which it sounds like could be likely by those symptoms.
Also it wouldnt cost anything but time and your labor to remove engine, tear down and inspect and then determine which way to go as you will have a more informed decision.
