help me trouble shoot my steering problem

Hey all

I was making a quick u-turn and half way through the turn it felt like all the resistance in my steering disappeared. i didn't think much of it, figured i might have slid or something. then i parked and ate and on the way home it felt like my steering had no life to it (like it had no force feedback if you know what that is) and it took more turns than usual to turn the wheels. so i got home and parked and popped my hood but it was too dark to see anything but i tried turning my wheel through the window and every turn i can hear a short pumping noise and my wheel would move a slight bit.

what happened? any suggestions or ideas appreciated

-power steering fluid is ok
-power steering belt is ok

checked most joints except for the upper control arm ball joint and i didn't see anything broken or out of place (that i know of). the tie rod joint compresses and extends with the turn of the wheel.

semi complete view

i forgot what these were called

driver side

passenger side

this is what i meant by the tie rod end ball joint extending, is this normal?

could a blown shock or something with the springs cause this steering issue i have?

appreciate the help

Hey, did you ever happen to get this issue taken care of?

Something similar just happened to my car.
Sometimes if I give the steering wheel a little nudge to turn left (freeway), or take a turn going left at around 30-40 mph, the car seems to go into the turn a little more. It almost feels as though the left/front tire turns all the way. When the car starts to go straight again, the steering wheel is actually turned a few degrees to the right... but the car is going straight. If I jerk the wheel around left & right at a stop, it straightens the wheel back up.

It also feels as though I've lost responsiveness in steering, and I can't feel as much resistance in the wheel, either.

I did a quick inspection of things, so far everything looks ok. I haven't, however taken a GOOD look yet... it's starting to rain.

Just trying to see if any troubleshooting you did might give me some insight.

no clue and no help

i gave up after i let my friend with an sh drive and all he said was it did feel a bit loose but nothing out of the normal. my car seems to want to pull to the right much more than to the left when i'm swerving around on the road trying to see if i can induce a problem.

i've gotten used to it by now, i'll just blame it on me know being used to being lowered

lmk if you figure something out. try looking at your steering column, maybe you broke a tooth? i'm not savvy enough to pull mine out
