Help me out fellas!

i have a 99 base with about 129k miles on it. i have been having some problems with oil consumption and such. let me make everything really clear...

1. black smoke under acceleration. LOTS of black crap on the bumper- almost "chunky stuff"
2. uses a lot of oil.. i fill it up between oil changes
3. burning smell.. kinda like rubber not sure
4. NO BLUE SMOKE
5. white "smoke" or steam in the mornings
6. No coolant loss whatsoever'
7. acceleration doesnt seem to be smooth in first gear sometimes

My thoughts on what is happening: could be- o2 sensor (black smoke), valves, pcv valve, head gasket or, hopefully not, piston rings.
I just really want to know what you guys think im up against here. let it be known that i havent had any real noticable performance loss yet. And dont bust my balls about how i need to search more...i have trust me

I don't know about your "chunky stuff" black smoke, but I had black smoke whenever VTec comes on since about 120k.

My CEL indicates EGR valve low flow at that time.

Recently, @190k, I cleaned the EGR valve and replaced both O2 sensors (CEL was indicating Primary O2 sensor bad) and the black smoke is gone. Don't know which one exactly caused that, but is your CEL on? If so, I would take care of whatever problem it's telling you.

Just go ahead and switch out those o2 sensors on second thought how old are they? and clean that egr valve and ports. got any work done to your car new exhaust header etc anything? If all stock i see alot of people saying preludes run rich from factory although mine being stock seems to have non of these issues same with burning oil even under hard accel i fail to see any signs of the slightest amount of oil lost. do a leak down compression test to be safe cheap and easy im also wondering if you have any cels? Also when was your last tune up including valve adjustment?

thanks for trying to help guys. to answer some questions i am not having a cel, 5 speed, no mods in the car yet, never had my o2 sensors changed that im aware of (looked in the giant stack of reciepts that the previous owner and i have amassed) and all ive done to try and clear it up is change the spark plugs.

im starting to think its partially the valves that are losing me oil because i get white smoke in the mornings and it goes away as soon as my car shows that the oil temp is going up. could be steam though..

so i looked around for more o2 sensor info and im going to order a new before cat sensor. a bad o2 sensor would explain why i have all the black stuff and bad milage and a burning smell.. anyone ever change these things out? any shops do it cheap?

If you have a floor jack and a metric wrench (22mm? I think), you can change it by yourself in less than 5 minutes. It literally takes longer to jack up the car than it does to change out the sensors.

i changed the o2 sensors over the weekend and i still have some black stuff on the bumper but the engine seems to run a bit smoother and has more vigor. i only replaced the primary and it looked TERRIBLE. it looked like a piece of carcoal and had some kind of white burn mark on it. should i change the other one?

The other O2 is only there for emissions stuff. It won't mess up your A/F curves if it is bad, so just leave it alone if it isn't throwing a CEL.

You can buy the universal ones. I think its as easy as connecting like 3 wires and save a huge amount of money.

You can buy the direct OE fit ones for $35. The universals all cost more than that.

OP, cleaning the EGR can't hurt and it is probably long overdue. You may also want to check your spark plugs. My guess is that they have been fouled since you are running so rich. If you fix both of those things and still no luck, it may be time for a compression test to make sure your piston rings are ok.

my spark plugs were changed not too long ago btw. and i just took it well into vtec and a nice puff of black came out so its only in vtec that visible smoke is there. otherwise its just residue on the bumper. and i dont have the slightest idea as to how to clean the egr so im not sure what to do about that
