Help! Lean motor

I've been experiencing catalyst efficiency below threshold codes with black smoke coming out of exhaust. I've replaced the bank 1 O2 sensor and haven't noticed any leaks. The only thing I can say is I have been putting 89 in my car. My next step is punching the cat for higher flow, regardless of the problem or not. Can running a lower octane cause my check engine light to come on and throw this code. Any help or advise would be appreciated. I'm driving a 2000 SH.....

I also remembered when going on a few hour drive I COMPLETELY ran out of oil, can this be a symptom of the problem at hand or is this separate? There are no oil leaks on the ground. Again thank you

Wow, umm its known that our 5th gens burn oil, but I have never heard of burning through 4-5 qts of oil in a 'few hour' drive, if there isn't any oil on the ground, then your engine bay has got to be covered in oil.

Take some cardboard and lay it under your car at night/when parked for a time and see where if any oil is leaking out at. I would check all your gaskets - valve cover, cam seal, vtec solenoid, dizzy, oil filter, oil pan... if these havent ever been changed then chances are one of these are for sure leaking. Definitely want to get this this fixed for sure, good luck

is there a lot of black smoke coming out of your exhaust even at idle? if so, you can probably blame all of your problems on your car burning a lot of oil.

with the rate you say you lost oil youre either burning a lot of oil or you should see a super obvious leak under the hood.

I haven't noticed while idling, I'll have to check it out. The oil may have been extremely low already before the trip but while we were out there the oil pressure light came on so he checked it out. There wasn't any oil leaks where we were at though.

As dog of war said, you need to check the oil on these cars very frequently.

Well we checked the oil on the 26th and it was completely empty. I put 4 qts in and just check it today (the 9th) and theres only approx 2 qts left. Shouldn't have to check it that frequently ha

Tues I'll be taking it to the garage to get some tests done...I'll keep ya posted

Im telling ya put a drop board down under your car - go to sears or something, or an appliance place and get a refridgerator box - take it home, drop it and drive up on it.. see where you are losing all this oil at. then you can have your shop focus their intial efforts there.. especially if you have all weekend before getting it into the shop, you can try some troubleshooting yourself.

Im guessing that is your oil pan, with that much loss.

-When was the last time you had your oil changed?
When did you start having this problem in relation to your oil change? before?/after?/never had an oil change
-Check to make sure the filter is on correctly and tight.. do this
-The oil drain plug could not be threaded correctly/loose/no washer on the bolt

I've only had the car since Feb 9th so as far as an oil change goes I'm not sure when it was done last. I bought the stuff to do it and when we tried to do it ourselves we couldn't because some idiot put lock tight on the drain plug. I'll take your advice as far as the board goes tomorrow I will go somewhere to get a big one.

Ill keep my fingers crossed for ya,.. seems whoever you bought it from had an issue with this (i'd be guessing) and tried to take care of it with some lock tight on the bolt. maybe a stripped oil drain plug, hmm.. update us after the shop on tuesday.. good luck

Well, the garage said it's the rings but he came straight out and said he didn't do a compression test though. So I bought a tester and my fiance did it his self I forget what all the readings came back as I know 2 of them were 210 and I think the other 2 were 185ish. He said that's normal for a honda? Someone told me to use a cap full of oil after the first test and it will read something else if it's the rings or something like that...I'm not sure. No one else has ever heard of using oil though so we didn't try it. While doing the test though, he found out 3 out of 4 plugs were the WRONG kind of plugs for hondas so I bought new plugs and wires. Someone said maybe it just needs a tune up so what the hell would it hurt. They said if it still does it, it could be valve seals and valve stem seals, so that is my next motive before I spend $1400 for the rings.

^a tablespoon of oil poured through spark plug hole into the cylinder twill indicate worn rings if the compression goes up. if not, look at your valves. in my case, its the rings.
