Help asap! Crank Pulley Question

Hello, I am wondering if I can run my h22a without a crank pulley. I think that the timing belt or something under the timing cover might be rubbing the timing cover. I did notice that my crank pulley is worn on the backside and that could be the problem, but whatever it is, is making a loud noise. I have removed the alternator and power steering belts, and want to try to run the car without the crank pulley to see if the sound is still there.

I can't think of any reason I wouldn't be able to, but wanted to see what some of you all thought. Thanks for your help in advance.

I'd say you can, just make sure the key that locks the crank pulley and timing pulleys is held in someway. If you lose that key, you lose timing and that's gonna be a bigger problem!

Thanks for your reply. I decided against it as I wasn't sure if the pulley actually balanced the crank or not, and I didn't want to risk damaging anything. I went ahead and pulled the cover. I didn't notice any signs or rubbing on the inside of the cover.

I went ahead and ordered a new lower timing cover from majestic. The one that was on there was a JDM that the previous put on. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

You can't remove the crank pulley anyways. It turns the timing belt as well as the accessory belt. The two halves of the pulley can't be separated.

It does play a role in balancing the crankshaft as well. That's why underdrive pulleys are a no-no.
