Help! 5th Gen Oil Change Story

I just got my 2001 Prelude in October, it's got just over 2200 miles. I was under the hood over the weekend and decided to check the oil. It was below the fill mark and looked pretty dirty. I hadn't check the oil since getting the car, so I got worried. I brought it to a local 10 minute oil change place and had it changed. I drove it home with no problems.

I took it out a little later and jumped on it a little and when I got about a block away from the house I started smelling burning oil. I pulled in the driveway and popped the hood and had white smoke coming up from the firewall area. I looked under the car and nothing was leaking, but it appeared that the white smoke was coming from oil burning off of the braided mesh part of the exhaust pipe just before the cat.

***One other thing I should mention. Just before this happened, I wanted to see what the car would sound like with a K&N filter on it before I went and spent $200 on an AEM, so I took an old crx intake tube an cut it in half (the curved end of it inserted into the stock prelude intake tube put the fiter right behind the battery and allowed the hood to close.***

So anyway, when I got back from "the test" and this white smoke started coming out, I'm thinking it had something to do with my strange intake device. I also noticed when I turned the car off I heard a noise that I thought sounded like the intake continuing to suck for a few seconds after the ingition was cut--which might be normal but I never noticed it before. (I am noticing it now, even with the stock intake back on the car.)

Getting back to the oil incident, I have not had that white smoke since this happened, now 4 days ago, but I continue to smell a little oil burning when I'm at stoplights or sitting in the driveway. It's nothing like the first time, but it is kinda've annoying to smell. I did take it back to the oil place, and they said that the filter is right above that pipe, and that oil probably leaked onto the pipe when it was taken off, and that their may have been some standing oil on it and when I took off, it fell onto the pipe. They said they cleaned some more off, and off I went.

So, has anyone else had a problem like this before with oil changes? Does anyone think that the intake incident had anything to do with it, or was it just a coincidence? And if the oil place is right about the excess oil, how long will it take for the smell to go away?

Sorry for the long post, or short story, but I'm new to Preludes and never have anything like this happen with my previouse Hondas (I've had four of them!)

Don't worry about it, it happens to almost everone, just not as bad as you mentiond.. The problem is that the drain for the oil is right on top of were the flex pipe is located so when you get the oil change and they don't cover your flex pipe a bit of oil gets in there and thats why you are getting the oil smell, It shoud go away after a couple of weeks, it just has to burn itself out...

PS.. V-TEC uses alot of oil so if you are using V-TEC that's the reason why you are loosing a bit of oil and for it being black well thats normal to... No problems with the lude bro, just keep her driving...

The oil filter on your lude is located directly above the exhaust cat/flec section.
Whenever I take my filter off I always get some on the zorst.
I usaully just wipe it offf with a rag or somethin.
Im geussin the oil change guy dropped a load of oil on ur pipe and didnt wipe it off.

I ALLWAYS cover the flex pipe, and i have yet to smell the burning oild smell!!! Take the minute and cover the pipe with the bag that you bought the oil and filter in. I allways do my own oild changes for that reason right there. No one is as carefull with my car as i am. I'm anal about this that can be prevented with something as simple as a plastic bag.
So next time just cove it and you will not have to smell that horrid smell of burning oil.

I don't think covering the Flex pipe with a plastic bag when the pipe is hot is a good thing.. I think you forgot to mention that!!!

Just let the car sit for 10-15min. I didn't figure that i would need to say that. But hey there it is. And if it is still too warm for a bag put a rag on there to insulate it. I have never had any trouble with it i could not touch the flex pipe cause it was too hot to the touch but didn't bother the rag, just use some common scence here and there should be no problems.

The sucking noise you heard is normal- it's the manifold/cylinder vacuum equalizing to normal pressure. You just don't hear it as easily with the stock intake since it's mor convoluted and less open.
