Header Wrap = Cracked Header??

I was reading some threads about Thermo-Tec and the header wrap, and some of the posts state that wrapped headers will absorb moisture and eventually crack with prolonged use. Is this true, has anyone here actually had this happen to them personally?

I'm curious to see if it is true.

Don't high performance track cars coat their exhaust systems to help reduce engine bay temps?

There are various thoughts on this. If you have a fully coated header(s), then it may only be needed where bodywork is extremely close. Track cars are such that they do not see the same conditions as street machines-thus one cannot simply wrap for the sake of doing so unless you are prepared to maintain the header. That means controlling condensation.

Just a thought.

I was mostly concerned to help keep temps down when running a F/I application.

I don't want to risk damage to any parts, you know what I mean?

I wouldn't bother with wrap - it voids the warranty on every header that I know of.

For FI engines, check out Hiper Coat extreme :

http://www.hpcoatings.com/hipercoat_extreme.htm

lifetime guarantee

Jet Hot makes a super-hi temp coating too but I don't have a link for you.

Having parts coated costs bank. When I win the lottery, I'll consider it.

HPC quoted me $150 to put the standard Hipercoat on a brand new header. Not cheap, but not "bank" either.

If you want to make your header last for a long time and significantly reduce underhood temps, there might not be a $25 solution. FI is expensive primariliy b/c of all the stuff that goes with it, not the actual sc or turbo. Just save up and do it right if you're concerned about damage.

$150 + shipping isn't all that much. Meh, Kamikaze headers are only $200 anyway, might as well just thermo wrap them and call it a day.

header wrap is not cheap either. I used two spools on my motorcycle header to wrap it really nice and tight, pleanty of overlap. The throttle response was a little quicker no cracks either. About $100.00 for the wrap.
