Sunday night I went on a date despite the sputtering. I ended up driving about 80 miles (again, with the A/C on). Got home about 1am, parked her, and went to bed. Everything was decent until I went to grab some breakfast Monday morning. I get in the car, turn the key, and nothing comes on. The battery is completely dead, power locks won't even work. So I left it there until tonight.
I decided to do some troubleshooting this evening and the obvious first step was to see if she would jump-start. I get in the car before connecting anything to verify the situation, and as I suspected, still nothing works. So I connected the cables and gave it a shot. She fired up on the first try, no issues whatsoever. I immediately disconnected the cables and she stayed running. I turned on the headlights and nothing bad happened. So I turned her off and turned her back on a few times. Still no problems, except for the sputtering.
After getting it running, I popped the hood and pulled the spark plug cover to check my first guess. Yep, sputtering was in fact caused by a newly-cracked plug wire arcing (cylinder #3). I straightened the 180º rotation they put on it and threw some electrical tape around it. Thank you retards for screwing up $50 plug wires (they split the sheathing on 3 out of 4).
I drove her around and sure enough, the sputtering was gone. So I decided it was time to investigate the dead battery a little further. After looking in the under hood fuse box, I noticed that the 100A Battery fused appeared fried. So I pulled it out and checked it. It seems the fuse blew a long time ago and instead of replacing it, someone soldered it back together. Well, that's dangerous.
So I put the fuse back in and immediately after, I started getting a mechanical buzzing, like an electrical motor that is hung. It happens intermittently but about every 30 seconds on average. It last for about 2 seconds. Most of the time, it sounds the same, but sometimes it sounds like a motor that is being prevented from spinning. It's coming from below the IM, about where all the EVAP garbage is attached to the firewall. I pulled nearly every fuse our cars have, but the sound is still occurring.
So I have no idea what to do about that. We'll see if I have a dead battery in the morning. As always, suggestions are welcome.
