gutted muffler, is the FREE mod worth it?

hey i want to get a deeper and louder sound from my exhaust system. But before i have the money to do it properly (2.5" mandrel bent piping throughout with a 2.5" collector size header, probably hytec replica, highflow cat, 21in" resonator going to a vibrant stealth muffler), my question is, how would a gutted stock muffler sound? Is is worth the "free" mod? Or will the cops love me?
Thanks

Loud as hell and raspy....It would sound more or less like a 4 cylinder weed whacker.

The set up you mentioned is the way to go in my opnion, hell i just did that exact set up (minus the muffler) a few days ago. My advice, just save up and do it right and you will have that 'sound' you are looking for.

A gutted mufler would cause a lot of turbulant flow and decrease exhaust velocity. cheapest would be no muffler at all but loud of course.
