It's not the clutch.
If the car is grinding and you have over 20k miles change the Tranny fluid, To Honda Manual Transmission fluid, and make sure that you use that. And if that does not work, About 1000 miles later then Switch to GM Syncromesh fluid. I switched mine out at 50K to the GM syncomesh and i can NOT make the car grind!!! I really recommend the stuff, But it is $9 per quart, that is why you want to try the Honda stuff it is about $2 per quart and if possible to stay with Honda stuff.
The car slips into 1st gear MUCH easer now it slides into the gear when rolling (slowly) But hey it helped!
Hey it worked!!
Originally posted by illusion my 4th gen does this too. when i double clutch it eliminates the grinding.
That's the same thing i do in my 5th gen to stop it from grinding into 5th.

Did u do any racing lately where u shifted really quick and grinded?
I have an 01' and brought mine back to the dealer for replacement within 6 months the 5th gear synchro, shift fork, and other misc. parts!
I see u have a 99' so hopefully ur still under warranty!
Doh! that's exactly what i did, i missed a gear while racing, from 2nd to 3rd.. lost me the race, otherwise i woulda had him. my car is a '99 and i have 45,000 miles on it. i got the 45,000 mile maintainance, but i'm not sure they replace the transmission fluid...anyone know otherwise? my car is unfortunately not covered under warranty anymore.. not since 30,000 miles.

since you're saying to change the tranny fluid to Honda fluid, what kind of tranny fluid do our cars come w/ out of the factory then? i thought it would be Honda fluid to begin with. like i said in my other reply, i've only had the 45,000 mile maintainance done..so i dunno if they changed it or not..

ah the infamous 2nd to 3rd grind. When that happened to me, they totalled up to $800 in bills because basically rebuilt 5th and reverse when I did that against a Type R. But I was under warranty, so no questions asked, and they fixed it right away. It's not your clutch, it's your transmission.

i'm hoping that changing the tranny fluid will help some...maybe up to now i've never had it changed.. i'll be so relieved if that's the case....there's no way i'm taking all this money i have to fix my car instead of hook it up...
great.......i think that problem came up for me......except in my case im SCREWED
they said the shift forks are bent and the 5th gear synchro is close to gone.......
the only problem is my car is under the extended warranty and honda care claims the problem resulted from my AEM CAI......so basically they are charging $1600 for taking apart the car....fixing it....and putting it back together....
i asked him how the intake caused the problem and the guy stammered and couldnt' answer me......finally he ended up saying it was indirect......that the performance mod caused me to drive the car hard which in turn caused the problem......
he said the shift forks don't bend by themselves and the synchros dont' wear down that fast.........so the problem was an indirect result of my mod and now i can't do anything about it except pay for the repairs
(i bought the car used last august ........1998 5spd w/ 33,000 miles then..........it has 43,000 miles now)
I just got mine back from the dealership for the exact same thing-- my snychronizer went out and locked me out of reverse- (and I barely have 11000 miles- the other gears wroekd fine --now that I've got it back- its grinds like mad--but I also had a AEM CAI-- honda said the unless I cracked open the block or transmission, then the warranty covered it-- so that's pretty bs about them not covering it. Try taking it to another Honda dealer, I've found it varies from dealer to dealer about what they will cover. Also if this is so widespread, why hasnt there been a recall? Honda is usually really good about that stuff---Im rather suprised
