Gotta put a new engine in my SH - will any h22a do?

Hi guys,

I recently blew the engine on my 98 Prelude SH. Can i put any h22a in there, or does it need to be from another 5 speed, or even worse from another SH?

Thanks for your input.

I understand that the H22A4 block has a different casting on the bottom end to allow the bolting up of the ATTS unit. Same probably goes for the 5-speed transmission (sans ATTS diff unit) on any Type SH. The standard H22A block is very similar, but for any SH application, it's missing some critical mount points and other things.

I would stick with a 1997-2001 Type SH long block or short block to be safe.

If you plan on keeping the SH tranny your stuck with a SH block. If you want a base engine your gonna have to ditch the tranny.

You have to get rid of the ATTS unit also, and source a new ECU from a base model.

Much simpler if you find yourself a SH motor instead.

I just swapped an 01' SH motor with only 35,000 miles into my 97 SH and it feels like new....I did some research and exactly like kahnBB6 stated....u need an SH due to the bolt patterns...keep the atts and find urself a nice SH motor...check ur local junkyards before looking online...

You could take out the motor and then send the block out to be overbored.

The cylinders can be over bored .25mm and then oversided pistons installed. In the case of a stock Prelude SH, you can get 10.6:1 J-spec Honda OEM OS pistons and install those. This will give you about 15-20 more horse power without issue or concern.

All you'd need to do is get the motor out, and then purchase all of the gasket sets from Honda.

How badly did you blow the motor? Is it not recoverable at all?

why cant he just go with a true type s motor....I mean come on they have atts and should bolt up just fine....the only problem is finding one....most people when selling a type s motor are acutally selling a S Spec motor....which just has a lsd....true type s motor should work just fine....
good luck finding one though....check ebay

Yeah, a Type-S (not a S-Spec) will work too.

I know this thread is OLD......but.....so it is possible to install an H22a in a 98 base? what items would we need to change from the H22a4 to the H22a? Is it an exact replacement? Would the H22A4 ECU work with the JDM motor? ...................... I also need an engine but for a 98 base model....and so far the H22A4s are a tad bit pricy.

Search the board. An ECU swap is not needed per se, the big difference is that the JDMs have the crank sensor in the distributor which makes it incompatible with the 96+ OBD2 ECUs which need it at the crank. You can swap oil pumps & transfer your USDM engine harness and distriubutor to make up for it.

Other than that it is plug and play. I would go ahead and plan on doing a t-belt, thermostat, and front/rear main and cam/balancer seals at the same time.

thanks man...I actually found the thread a few minutes ago about the swap...I guess I'll go with the H22a and not buy a $1500(plus tax) H22a4 with 89+k miles for sale at a junk yard...since my untunned turbo engine in my 98 base died(well not totally dead, still runs, but VERY CRAPPY). My current engine just lost ALL compression in CYL 4 and CYL 2 is getting there also
