Getting the car on Friday...

Ok so this 98 has 54000kms on it.
The dealer doesn't have any service records...
Now what I want to know is if I should do an oil change ASAP?
What should I be doing for maintenance once I have the car?

BTW dealer offered me to get a 3 yr comp warranty for $1G but is itlikely parts will screw up anytime soon?
I have to let them know on Monday if so.

Thanks

If the car is SS, GET THE WARRANTY.

A large # of members here have blown their trannies.....a few under 20k miles. Do a search for SS tranny and you'll see what Im talking about.

Well large #, but my SS is doing great ......... I drive it PRETTY normally, occasional VTEC....................... most of the time I'm pretty docile on the car............

And I do have a few mods, and more are on the way........

I didn't get the extended warranty either.......

I heard that some dealers won't replace the SS tranny if it goes out still under coverage? Is there any truth to this? If so, then Honda can kiss my sweeeeeeeeeeeeet yellow a$$

Also to keep ur car under good maintainence especially oil changes and especially especially keep the tranny fuild fresh n clean ...............

latez.........

So you're not buying it from an actual Honda dealership? If not, then go ahead and spend the extra $1K on the insurance, cause too many things can go wrong in the span of a couple years.

It is from a honda dealership but the 5yr/100000kms is over in oct 27/01.

So after that no more warranty.

That's why.

Well the reason I was asking is because at my local Honda dealership, they offer Honda Certified used cars with the original factory warranty, plus an additional 5 yr, 100K powertrain warranty free of charge. Works that way on all pre-owned Honda certified cars. But I dunno, it may work different in Canada...

Don't you mean Oct 27/02? I bought my '98 last year and the original (and only other) owner took delivery 11/28/97 meaning the 5yr/100k warranty ends 11/28/02 on mine. I'll hit the time limit way before the mileage (only 56k). It costs $35 to transfer the ownership info at Honda HQ.

Do you do a lot of km a year?

Personally, when I got my 97 Prelude with 71000km, I changed my spark plugs, flushed the clutch fluid, rad, and brake fluid. Did a oil change as well and adjust the valves. I didn't want to take any chances with Lude!

Oh BTW the 3yr comp waranty is not bumper to bumper... you'll have to probably pay for a deductible for every distinct problem they fix...

I didn't get a comp warranty... it's a Honda!

Hmmm... good call on the synthetic...

The 5 year/100000km should be enough... if anything major happens, Honda should cover it...

To have all the fluids flushed shouldn't cost you too much...

5year ends on oct 27/02 but after that i gotta cover it but from what it seems is the it had one owner a guy for the life of the car.
In good condition and only 54000kms (around 12000kms per year) which is what I drive myself.

And now you plan to mod the car? How much are you paying for it if you don't mind me asking?

I remember when I was looking for a Lude...

I can across a red one and it was an SS too...

Personally I didn't like the way it performed.. it wasn't smooth enough for me when shifting and you don't have as much control over the gears like I though you would (like on a 5 speed)...

The price was good though, it was a 97 with like 36000km and they were asking 20,000$CDN... 2 years ago... I figured if I was going to spend that much, might as well get what I really want!

I don't plan on doing any major mods..just bolt ons.

But if the tranny screws up is it that expensive to fix??
I am so confused if the warranty will be an investment or not
