Fuel Tank Capacity on a 5G, Questions.

Ok,

So I get the tank filled up today and they put 11.9 US Gallons in the tank.

I take a quick look at the manual, and notice that the gas tank is 15.9 US Gal.

So that should mean that I had 4 more gallons in the tank.

However, the yellow light was on and the needle was down at the bottom.

Does this really mean that I actually had 4 more gallons in the tank and could go about 100 miles further???

Ive taken 15.4 before. Once the light comes on you still have about 80 miles left.

Ok... one more question boost whore:

Is the yellow light a function of the gauge or a separate sensor in the fuel tank??

Pretty sure it's a seperate sensor, cause the gauge won't move much but the light will sometimes go on and off with acceleration.

The yellow light is controlled by a separate thermistor in the fuel tank. When the thermistor is surrounded by fuel, it stays cool and has high resistance so the light stays off. When the fuel level drops below the thermistor, the device warms up and it's resistance decreases. This allows enough current to flow through the light for it to illuminate.

The needle is never very accurate anyway, could've been moved slightly during indiglo gauge installation. Yes the light is activated by a seperate unit.

Mine is ****ed up right now anyway, my light never comes on. Ran it down to 14.4 gallons once and the light never came on. The bulb is fine, I tested it. It's just not receiving a signal. Could be an open in the wire or something wrong with the sending unit. Haven't tested it

yeah....I used to always get just over 300 miles before my light went on....I'd drive like 360 miles an still have a gallon or more left

I also think that there's a separate sensor since the light may fade on an then off....aren't most fuel lights the same way? for instance....if you're on an incline, the light may be on even tho you've got like 150 miles left

Yeah, it's a law. There is no such thing as a self serve island in NJ.

You would think it would make the gas more expensive but NJ has one of the cheapest gas prices in the country. It like 20 cents cheaper than in PA.

I usually fill up when the gauge is on the line before the E line and the light is going on & off as I drive. That's usually 11.5-12 gallons for a fill up. Never knew there was that much gas left sloshing around in there either.

Yeah, the last guy spilt gas on my car when taking the nozzle out... I almost smashed his Russian ass when he gave me a dirty look when I told him to watch it.

Yeah, I was wondering how guys were getting almost 400 miles out of a tank of gas. This expalins sooooo much.

I know that it's the law in oregon too....they always have to pump your gas when you go there.....it's strange, but I guess it keeps jobs ::

WTF? I'd straight up tell the ****er that I'm pumping my own goddamn gas. Don't want some attendant spilling gas or scratching my ride.
