Fuel gauge only reads half when tank is full?

Hello,

I have a 2000 Prelude w/auto trans and the gas gauge never reads higher than a half tank even when it's full. At first I thought that I wasn't actually filling it up, but the last time I put gas in it I made sure it was full (could see fuel at the top of the filler neck) and yet the gauge still didn't read higher than a half tank.

Has anyone had this problem? I assume that it is the sending unit, but figured I would ask you guys if you had any ideas as well.

Thanks,

Alan

I'd suspect the sending unit also. If you have installed a gauge face/overlay, I've seen a few installs that ended up binding on the needles and not allowing a full sweep.

I haven't changed the gauge faces myself, but it looks like the previous owner might have. Are they white-faced gauges from the factory?

No. I don't know of any 5th gens with white faces from the factory. Might be worth pulling your cluster for a closer look.

Bingo, those needles run real close, so any of the aftermarket gauge overlays will stop one or more of your needles somewhere.
