fan question

so my car gets hot when idling for a while and i popped the hood and found that the fans werent working.do they only come on when the car is getting dangerously hot or should they b on all the time?the car stays cool when running just because of the cool incoming air.so do i need to get new fans or what?

Test the fans. The radiator fan turns on when engine coolant temperature reachs ~198F. If the fans work pull out and test your engine coolant temperature switch. If the switch fails the radiator fan will not come on on it's own.

To test the fan unplug it from the harness. Looking at the plug with the lock clip on top terminal A is on the left terminal B is on the right. Connect battery power to the A terminal and ground the B. The fan should turn on. If not the fan is bad.

To test the ect switch remove it from the thermostat housing. Suspend the switch (only the metal part, not the plastic terminal) in a container of water heat the water and watch the temperature with a thermometer. Check the ect switch for continuity between the two terminals. You'll need a multimeter. When the water reaches >198F there should be continuity. Which means the switch works. If you can not get continuity the switch is bad.

All of this is show with illustration in the helms manual. Get one.

To test the fans, just turn on the A/C. Open the hood and look at the fans. If both don't come on, you likely have a bad fan. If they do come on, check the ect switch.
