exhaust problems

Can anyone please tell me why exhaust is making my whole rear bumper black. I can wash it and after driving the car for an hour the inside of the exhaust is black along with the rest of my rear end. Any solutions?

that means you're running rich. get a vafc and lean it out... it should solve your problems.

What if you don't have a VAFC or can't get one. How would you lean it out then??

wouldnt it help using gas with higher octane maybe? since that would help the fuel burn better?

Interesting responses-BUT the answer is simply that all 5th gen Preludes run rich right off the boat. It makes no difference what exhaust you have. You can try to lean it out a bit with a V-AFC. IT's just the way they are

Please remember "octane" does not help gas "burn better"

Higher Octane decreases the chance of detonation. Which in turn allows the engine to better the ignition timing by retarding it less, for better performance.

Rich or Lean?

Rich or lean is the amount of fuel used in the air/fuel ratio.

i use to get the black dust too (RS*R catback)..and i use a vafc with -5% leaned during wide, -4% on narrow. there IS less dust with the vafc.

i think i had black dust even when it had the stock exhaust.

Rich is more FUEL in the Combustion, LEAN is more AIR.

Ok , now that makes a little more sense. How would you tell if your running rich or lean ? I know the black smoke accumalated on your bumper means that but what are other signs. ?

Ughhh I know exactly what you mean my lude is pearl white and I have a stock exhaust. Every friggin time I wash my car, two days later I get little flecks of carbon all over the rear bumper. It's pissing me off and it can't be good for the paint. I actually have to use this like paint stain remover stuff to get it off cuz if I don't I'll have to scrub for hours. Isn't there any way to remedy this? I also notice its hella worse when I'm using vtec, which is understandable but annoying.
