Engines for each model of 5th gen...

What kind of engine is for each model of the 5th Gen? What's the difference between H22 and H22A...are there any other engines? Is 2.2 DOHC V-tech = H22A? thanks....because prelude is still new for me... What's so great about H22/H22A?

H22A was the 4th gen VTEC.

Our 5th's have the H22A4 = 200 hp
Type S motor with 220hp sold in Japan.
In Japan and Europe there was also a 5th gen sold with a SOHC that produced only 135 hp.
Also there is the H23 sold in japan that produces 160 hp.

thanks... I hear people say they wanna swap a H22A in an accord or civic...etc... So they mean they want a 4th Gen engine? How come I never hear people say they want a H22A4?

How's the prelude engine compared to integra engine?

More specifically...

H22A is the JDM Type S motor (220PS~217HP)
H22A1 is the USDM 4th gen motor (190HP)
H23A1 is the USDM 4th gen Si motor (160HP)
H22A4 is the USDM 5th gen motor (190-200HP)

There were some odd ones, like the H22A5 and H22A6 that were sold in european countries that make roughly what the H22A1 make.

Pferdestärken (ps): German word for Horsepower, Japanese and German auto manufacturers use it to rate the engines power.

EDIT: also in terms of power the newer H22A4 is better cause iit makes more HP. It is rumored that he extra 5-10 HP comes from the different header, or a different ECU, BUT I dont think its ever been confirmed.

but in terms of closed deck (H22A1) vs. open deck (H22A4, H22?) there are various reasons why one might be better than the other but I prefer to stay out of those types of debates

Its not the header. This has been proven by keith in your club
TPC! He compared a 97 to a 2001 -> exactly the same!

I think the 5 HP may come from Fuel and Air mixtures in the ECU.
But i am not sure!

I agree too, The reason Greddy couldn't release the kit for 00-01 Ludes was cuase the ECU for 00-01 was different from 97-99. and 99-00 is where there was a increase of 5 HP from the 5 speeds.

but like you I'm not sure...

I still think the h22a4's (5th gen) make only 180hp.... not the 200hp as Honda states....

Most 5th gens make 150hp on a dyno stock..... that would be a 25% powertrain loss, which is really unheard of.......

Now 180 to 150 is your usual 10-15% loss.......

I've seen many 160+ dynos too on stock 5ths.

Marcucci in Europe a SOHC 2.0L is also sold. Thats the 135 hp one.

There are too many different motors sold in Europe for my small yankee mind to keep up with.

As for the 5HP, I think it is pure marketing bull****. Don't let the stated HP numbers make you decide to buy an A1 or A4... buy it for open/closed deck, OBD1/2, or availability/price.

"VTEC", not "V-tech"!

In the UK (and maybe the rest of Europe), there was also a 5th gen with a 2.0 litre engine.

My H22A5 (2.2 VTEC) is rated at either 185 or 186 BHP.
