my cheap alternative is simple green or grease lighting with citrus.
bag off all electrical components; crucial ones being the alternator, battery, distributor, alarm components (if you have them), and anything else you want to feel safe about.
what i did next was get two windex bottles to mix the simple green in. one had a 3/4th to 1/4th water mix, the other had half and half. spray anywhere you see is dirty VERY LIBERALLY with the half/half mix, let that sit for 5 to 10mins then spray it down again with the same mix. let that eat through the grease and loosen up any grime that looks thick. after another 5mins hose down everything and rip off the bags (i literally did that, didn't want anything soaked).
now take your car out for a drive and go off somewhere for 20ish minutes so the engine can dry and heat up any remaining grease. when you come back bag off the same components again (i never had trouble with the engine being hot enough to melt the plastic bags) and this time use the 3/4th's mix in the same manner as above. spray down everything again, pull off the bags, and go for a drive.
the third step is to use some sort of engine bright spray if you so wish.
i found this to be pretty cheap and extremely effective. i did the same thing to a 16 year old buick the other day and it removed 16 years of grease

. i saw the color of the valve covers for the first time in it's life.
