engine wash?

My engine bay is really dirty and I want it looking really clean. However I am afraid of damaging the engine in the cleaning process. Any suggestions?

Well you can either use a rag and wipe it down or spray that in there then spray it off with water..

A post guy made about his STI on my local forum..

The best thing that I have used is a combination of P21S Autowash and Adam's All Purpose Cleaner. I normally spray the Autowash on the entire engine bay (after I cover up the alternator of course) to let it loosen up the grime. Once that is beginning to spot, I spray it down again and then I spray some Adam's on the most soiled spots. Adam's is deceptively strong at degreasing so I make sure that it is not allowed to dry because it WILL oxidize finishes and even remove anodizing in severe cases. Once it is sprayed down good, I take boar's hair brush to it to agitate the soiled spots and just rinse it out. To finish everything off, I use Adam's VRT on the plastics and rubbers in the engine bay, and then Adam's In and Out spray on the stuff that is harder to get to and less visible. This doesn't take more than 30-45 minutes on even the most neglected engine bays and lasts a very long time (months). All of the products I've mentioned can be purchased here:

Boar's hair brush: (AWESOME for wheels too)

Adam's VRT: (AWESOME for tire dressing)

my cheap alternative is simple green or grease lighting with citrus.

bag off all electrical components; crucial ones being the alternator, battery, distributor, alarm components (if you have them), and anything else you want to feel safe about.

what i did next was get two windex bottles to mix the simple green in. one had a 3/4th to 1/4th water mix, the other had half and half. spray anywhere you see is dirty VERY LIBERALLY with the half/half mix, let that sit for 5 to 10mins then spray it down again with the same mix. let that eat through the grease and loosen up any grime that looks thick. after another 5mins hose down everything and rip off the bags (i literally did that, didn't want anything soaked).

now take your car out for a drive and go off somewhere for 20ish minutes so the engine can dry and heat up any remaining grease. when you come back bag off the same components again (i never had trouble with the engine being hot enough to melt the plastic bags) and this time use the 3/4th's mix in the same manner as above. spray down everything again, pull off the bags, and go for a drive.

the third step is to use some sort of engine bright spray if you so wish.

i found this to be pretty cheap and extremely effective. i did the same thing to a 16 year old buick the other day and it removed 16 years of grease . i saw the color of the valve covers for the first time in it's life.
