Engine ticking noise

It's kind of hard to describe, but maybe you guys know what it is? I have a 99 Prelude 5 speed. It has a distinct muffled ticking noise, most often when im decelerating at around 2200 rpms and it is also sometimes audible at idle. My more mechanically-gifted friend is convinced that its the exhaust or cats, but I'm not so sure.

Any ideas?

Car is stock outside of a K&N.

Thanks in advance and sorry I can't describe it better for you guys.

about 46k. i got the car in may with about 40k on it, so i dont know it's long term maintenance history. the dealership told me that it had done all the preventative maintenance, etc., but we all know how trustworthy dealers are, especially when they smell a sale.

i think it would make it at all RPMs, but would be more obvious at the lower ones. does it sound kinda like a sowing machine?
