Engine ticking

So pretty much ever sense I bought my 98 base manny the engine has had a little ticking in it and sometimes its louder and other times quieter. It sounds like a constant ticking and I'm pretty sure its not supposed to tick like that anyone know how to fix this or what is wrong I've been thinking the lifter needs to be replaced.

Get a valve adjustment or do it yourself, if you aren't comfortable with engine maintenance just save your time and get it done. It has to be done right.

If you do it yourself be sure to consider:
Changing valve cover gasket. (Probably a must)
Changing camshaft seal plug (Buy an upgraded metal one, worth it)
Cleaning/Painting valve cover.

If it's truly a lifter, you could possibly get a special additive for your oil to help the problem.

Okay thanks you have any idea how much an average cost would be for a valve adjustment?

You know how it works, call shops and ask for a quote. Its a simple by the book job that they should be able to easily give you a price on.

Shop around, but ALWAYS do your research. Mechanic horror stories aren't fairtytales.

Honesty is more important than 'cheap'.

dohc specs:
intake .15-.18mm( adjust mine to .16)
exhaust .18-.20mm ( adjusted to .19)

they were at .004mm, way too tight

let head cool down to 100degrees or below before adjusting valves

set #1 TDC cams up, adjust cylinder 1 valves

rotate crank counterclock wise 180* cams will turn 90*, now adjust #3 clyinder valves

rotate crank counterclock wise 180, adjust #4 valves

then rotate crank counterclockwise 180 again, adjust #2 valves

recommend every 50,000miles or when someone so called engine builder fs up your motor.

hope this helps your ticking problem, mines all gone.

It takes one hour to due labor rate:89.95-129.95(i would prefer honda dealership because most other shops dont let the head cool down)

you would need to buy a valve cover gasket kit its around 50bucks or have the dealer do it( they charge 10% over cost tho)

like the other guy said it would be a good idea to change the cam seal since they leak because their plastic little extra labor time would be added, buy an aftermarket 3-oring seal like skunk2

I disagree on that but I think a better way of saying it is, if you CAN change your oil, you're smart and capable enough to accomplish this.

The SOHC valve adjustment is not the same as the DOHC, DOHC the feeler gauge is inserted between the cam and the rocker pad. If the OP isn't someone who works on his own car in the slightest the first thing I would say with a tick is to check the oil level before adjusting the valves, low oil level will make the valve train have a LOT of chatter.
