Hey guys. Sorry to post another thread regarding this dearly hated transmission. I have searched the other threads to try and find something related to what I am experiencing with no luck - so here goes.
First let me say I have 157k miles on this tranny with absolutely no problems. I use the shifter and run it through the gears "manually" about once a week bringing it up to the redline just to keep things clean
About a month ago, I noticed the engine revs too high between 1st and 2nd but not everytime. Sometimes it changes normally with the engine sounding just fine and then sometime the engine revs almost like I "held the clutch in too long" or hit the gas a little too quick. This happens when everything is cold or hot - doesn't matter.
Background info - when it did it the first time, I had about 50k on the transmission fluid. I changed it hoping it would fix the problem, but it's exactly the same. I've thought about changing it again since I've driven it about 3k since I changed it just to see if that will solve the issue. It really acts like some "signal" just doesn't get to the engine or tranny at the right time, because when it works right it's perfectly normal.
Does anyone know of anything I can trobleshoot before taking it to a transmission specialist?
Thanks!!

It's most likely your transmission slipping that is causing the revs to spike. Prepare for the worst...that tranny probably doesn't have many miles left.
Yeah man, Indy got it. Go easy on it and start calling around and searching on this site for possible routes you can take to get out of this situation. Might also want to start putting aside some money.
Actually, when it shifts and the revs spike, it hits hard in 2nd gear. If I were driving a stick, it would be similiar to when you press the gas a moment too quick before you let out the clutch to engage the next gear. THe engine would spike and then hit 2nd harder than normal.
Again, this happens sometimes. Other times, it shift and feels completely normal.
Thanks again!

Sounds like someone is in denial. What you have described is dead on for a crippled tranny. Spiking revs caused by slipping followed by hard shifting are textbook symptoms of a failing transmission.
well i commented on almost every failing auto ss thread, so why not this one,
i have the exact problem , word for word exact, been driving the car like that for the 30 ks ive owned it, it doesnt seem like its gonna die though it doesnt get much worse than high revving, between the 1st and 2nd, the rest of the gears now after 30 ks are starting to 'want to' rev high when the weather is cold as balls, you know what guys i will make a video of my tach while driving,
guy that started the thread, see if yours is worse or better.
fVck our luck for being stuck with this auto garbage.

Will do. When you post your tack, I'll compare.
For grins and giggles, I am taking it in to a trusted shop to see what they say. The reason I am taking it to this shop is the service rep has personally watched over this lude's maintenance since I bought it 8 years ago. She always asks when I'm ready to sell that she be the first to know. So she puts the best mechanics on "her" car

Agreed with everyone else..... I had a 97 auto tranny. It started shifting a little hard mostly in the cold, then worse, worse, until the whole tranny finally gave out completely. I wasnt even able to go like a few blocks without the gear slipping out.
yup, same issue here... second trans too.
Its inevitable that this trans will fail. I suggest warming it up for a considerable amount of time in the morning.
Luckily for me, where I live the winters are mild but yes I do agree.. that this trans is temperamental with the weather... when it is very cold or rainy... I too have experienced an "elongated shift from 1st to 2nd"... however I did ignore this... as I do remember reading something that explains this... in that basic manual that comes with the car... stating that its normal.
Yea, normal... I say BULL$HIT too, to that. I wish I remember how it explained it... but it was basically a mix of speedometer and computer control babblelygook..
Start saving for a transplant of your trans.
Im not going to sell this car...probably wont get a good price... once any smart shopper reads up about it on the net.

I took it in to the shop I spoke about in an earlier post. I was told, as most of you guys already have, that the rev spikes were a common sign of transmission problems. I plan to change the fluid again this weekend. Last time I changed it was about 3k miles ago so this should sortof act as a flush. I hope this helps some. I think I saw someone post something about transmission honey or some product like that. Might look for some at my local AZ.
