EGR port cleaning

I just got done doing my egr ports and i took some pics for those who would like to see how i did it.

these are the brass ports that i had to drill through, all together there are 6 ports, and i drilled and replaced them all.

I used a 1/8" drill bit, i had to use an extension later because the drill wouldnt clear a part on the intake manifold.

A hammer and punch

slide hammer

with a self taping screw to dit in the 1/8" hole, I dont know the scew size i just found one laying around and it fit. You should be able to use a screw with a slightly larger diameter and it should work. also the cup that conects to the slide hammer.

and a modified shop vac

First i had to remove these bolts to get acess to the driver side plugs. I also took out the pcv valve to make it easier.

Then punch a dent in the plug, preferably in the middle, using the punch. This is just to guide the drill bit when you drill the hole.

It looked like this when i punched the dent in the port plug.

then drill a hole through the plug, you dont want to go through the IM so be carefull. You will feel the difference when you get through the plug though.

then using the screw and the hammer cup end, screw the screw into the hole whith the cup atached.

Atttach the hammer

pull the plug

And my ports were chucked full of carbon, so the longest part of this project was cleaning the ports.

then put in the new plugs, cone side down, and make the edge of the plugs flush with the manifold.

I used the shop vac to clean all of the shavings and the carbon build up. I used a can of brake cleaner to clean the ports also. And it would be a good idea to use some grease on the drill bit to collect the shavings and to protect the bit from breaking off in the plug. This did happen to me and it was a B**** to get out. It took me two hours, to do the whole thing. About 20 mins to drill and pull the plugs, about 30 mins on the one plug that the bit broke off in about an hour and 15 to clean the ports good. I used a .22 cal gun cleaning brush and a coat hanger. And only 5 min to put in the new plugs.
The car runs so much better and now i know what they mean when they say "you can feel the vtec kicking in". It does feel a whole lot better. And that anoying CEL is gone for good. If you guys have any questions feel free to ask. By the way i have a 98 base with 158k miles.

According to what I've read, it's the same for ALL Honda EGR systems.

I have only seen those welds on 4th gen intakes, you can drill the weld off do your cleaning and install the new port plugs..

No more photos.

Of course I found this site too late. I got an insufficient flow code and was wondering how to clean it out. The pictures won't come up anymore. Anyone have them saved?
