EGR Insufficient Lift

I threw a code a few weeks ago for EGR Insufficient Lift. I just went through the troubleshooting procedures and came to the conclusion, replace the EGR valve. Any chance taking it off to clean may fix it or am I better off just buying one?

You can clean it...remove and use carb cleaner... See video below:

Be sure to do the EGR Ports while you are at it...I cleaned my EGR Valve and still threw the code...went away after doing the ports.

FYI...You will need a lot more Carb Cleaner than that guy shows in the video..I used almost a whole can on the EGR valve alone...and 2 Can s on the EGR Ports.

ASLO..Invest in an EGR Port cleaning Kit.. S.U.R. & R. EGR312 4 pc. EGR Port Cleaning Kit

You will have to clean more than just the open port holes..you need to snake the brush into the channels too...

A high pressure air nozzle is helpful in blowing out all the chunks you loosen.

I pulled it off over the weekend and cleaned the valve with some carb and throttle body cleaner. I purchased a new gasket to install as well and to my surprise when I pulled the EGR off there wasn't a gasked installed. After the cleaning, gasket install, and reset of the CEL I drove about two hundred miles this weekend and the light didn't come back on. I'll probably do the port cleaning this coming weekend just in case.

Without a gasket it probably wasn't seating right and the vacuum wasn't strong enough to open the valve with a leak.

Any chance this was contributing to the black carbon build up on my rear bumper?

that would be burning fuel too rich, egr does affect your a/f ratio in some slight way but preludes are already tuned to run rich just from the nature of the car. try to adjust where your muffler sits if anything, or just deal with it

Does anyone know where you get the replacement EGR Port caps? Like Advance Auto or Autozone?

Looks like a serious pain in the A to drill those ports out. I am considering doing it for maintenance.

You have to get them from Honda..they are only like 40 cents each.. You need 6. I got 16 so I had enough for another cleaning and extra in case i screwed up.

The new port plugs dont look the the old ones. The old ones are solid brass, the new ones are hollow (aluminum or steel)

It's not hard. Just pull the plugs...and clean, clean, clean, clean the ports.
Compressed air (via a compressor & nozzle) works best and in my opinion is a must. it gets all the big chunks blown out once you get them broken up.
I ended up using 2 large cans of carb cleaner for the job.
After using an EGR port cleaning tool kit (Flexable wire bristle brush) to loosen up the carbon in each port and into the side channels...I blew out as many chunks as possible by blasting air into each port.
Then soaked each port with carb cleaner & waited 2-3 min,
then repeated those steps over and over till I was out of carb cleaner.
Tap in the new plugs till the edge is flush with the port plugs.
Reassemble everything.
Clear any codes you may have had.
It may take a little bit of cranking to restart the car and some smoke will come out of the tail pipe.
Take the car out and give it a good wind out.

The new port plugs are Honda Part # 17199-PT3-AHM

They look like this:
