I've got 13k miles on mine and do oil changes every 3000 miles or so. I am still using dino oil but I plan to switch to synthetic (Mobil 1) for the next change.
I find I have to add about 2 quarts in between each oil change. I typically shift at 3-4k and do not hit VTEC very often.
I've read up on the H22A and how it tends to burn some oil, but I'm curious whether my consumption is normal, or whether it should stop sometime in the future
since our h22a motor is high output motor one of the side effects is to burn a little oil. some other prelude owners i met have said the same. i put a quart or so inbetween.
thats normal.

I'm at 22000 miles (01 SH) and my oil consumption has just about leveled off. Early on, I needed to add ~1-2 quarts in between each oil change (3000 miles), but since 15000 miles or so, I only need to add about half a quart every now and then.
On my 98 SS, I noticed the same trend and it finally stopped eating oil at 18000 miles.
If you're still consuming that much oil, I'd wait a while longer before going to synthetic.
When my car was new, it uses about 1 qt between oil changes (3500 miles) until after the 3rd oil change. Now, it does not use any oil if I change the oil even 3-4k mile ( I once changed it after about 5200 miles and it uses about 1 qt - I assume it is b/c the oil breaks down).

i have a 2001 base lude with 8000 miles on it
it burns about 1 quart every 1500 miles i'm really hoping that it starts to calm, i cant even get it out of my head
but the thing i don't understand is if people say that it normal, why do some not burn at all???????????????
I typically never have to add any oil between the 3000 mile oil changes for my SH with 40k miles. That's with routine autocrossing (2-3/month) and some track days. Not sure why some cars burn more than others. Even after a hard day of driving at the track, the oil seems to go down just a little (have to add just 1/4 quart)
I've been using OEM Honda filters and regular Castrol oil 10W30 since the car was new.
Serious, mine burns a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles. My car has 118,000 miles in the odometer. No smoke, no leaks, I don't know were all those quarts go.
I burn about a litre every 5,000km.. or a quart every 3200 miles for the folks from Canada Jr.
My layman theory about this is that Honda had two different manufacturers for the piston rings. My guess is that one set of rings makes the engine eat oil like mofo, and the other ones are like my engine. In our club we have people that either burn about a litre every 1-2K km, or quart every 1300miles, or people like me with very moderate and acceptable oil consumption. The level of the consumption does not depend on year or model of the car.
every 3k miles i add about 1 quart, 97 lude with 103 k miles and mobil 1 syn 10-30 with mobil filters
dont hit vtec that often, but i do use it a few times a week...those long slow curves when i get on the highway just seduce me sometimes...
I've talked to several service managers and independent mechanics, and they've all told me that anything from one to two quarts of oil between changes can be normal for an engine, especially one that is built with such close tolerances for high revs. Both my CRX hybrid (B16A) and my Prelude burn about a quart between changes. My friend has an 87 Cressida (same engine as NA Supras of same generation) and his uses a quart between changes as well. I also have a friend with a 94 Integra GSR that uses about a half quart to a quart between changes. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're putting like 3-4 quarts between changes or you see that you're visably burning oil (smoke and/or soot deposits on your bumper).

Our oil consumption has been less than 1 quart/3000 miles. It's a 2000 Base 5 speed w/ 31,000 miles. I use mobil 1 w/ the OEM filter.
The first 7000 miles were oil burn free, then it started using a full quart/3000 miles up to about 20,000 miles. It's since leveled off (or am I not driving so hard?).
The important thing is to check your oil each and every time you fill your gas tank up (especially if you've been driving like a maniac). I always keep it at the top mark.
Thanks for all the input guys. Good to hear that this is normal (or close to it). I might mention it to the dealer next time I'm in there, so they have it on record. Just in case.
