I need some ideas on how to run the lighting wires. Since most are unaware, the plug is located on the driver-side rear end, next to the tail light bulbs.

I was thinking of running it down under the carpet, under the donut spare, through the trunk drain bung, and then back to the bumper on the underside of the car.

So, the tow capacity for the prelude is 700 lbs, so if you trailer weighs 500 and you two bike weigh ( and they gotta weigh mroe) 100lbs each, add onto that the fuel and some tools and stuff....i gotta ask you, Kronn are you exceeding the Honda recomended tow rating?

I was under the impression that the tow rating was 1000lbs. However, the empty trailer only weighs ~200lbs. Bikes are 220lbs each. That's only 650-ish, total.

Well done man, great trailer especially if it follows the recommended weight!!

Looks like it would make great track support.

Very nice job there Kronn. I’ve had mine (purchased at U-Haul) on for over a year now and works great.

My Owner’s manual (page 162) also says 1000 pounds, and of course I think the 10% tongue weight is pretty standard (definitely want some weight on it).

I wouldn’t worry about any of the concerns mentioned in this thread, unless of course your off-roading your Prelude, then it may scrape. Obviously the car will behave differently with 1000 pounds behind it, but mine’s been great, mostly don’t know it’s there.

I have a similar, if not the same, wiring harness. I just ran it out from under the plastic cover into the spare tire cavity. Whenever I hook-up I just pull it out and shut the trunk lid over it, just be sure that it’s not in line with the latch. That way it’s out of the weather and has no chance of hooking on anything when I’m not using it.

He has the Curt Hitch. It's nearly identical to mine except it requires drilling big holes into your trunk.

Curt says install takes about 45 minutes, which I would guess to be about right. Mine installs in 2-3 minutes, assuming you know how to use a ratchet.

Here is the install instructions for the Curt brand hitch.

Mine is different though as I only had to drill 2 holes through the bumper reinforcement. I can't find install instructions for the one I have sorry to say.

What kind of hitch do you have H4L? I don't know if I want to drill holes in my trunk.

Not sure as I removed all the stickers many years ago now sorry to say. I think though it is a Rigid Hitch. Maybe I have the install instructions around but I will have to search.

I put my U-Haul in some time ago. great to have!

In hind-sight I wouldn't worry too much about holes in the trunk, but if you are, here are the installation instructions for the other type. This has been plenty strong for a small utility trailer.

I've found that the web-site images rarely represent what you will actually get from the retailer, so I'd ask them before ordering to see the installation instructions. That way if they get in a different style they can't hold you too it.

A quick search seems to show that some of these retailers have discontinued these hitches. For other guys interested, please post your results.

So for my Engineering Principles final project, I decided to "design" my existing tow hitch. Part of the requirements were to have a fully drafted and dimensioned set of blueprints. I've decided to share that with you folks. I have the DWG file (AutoCAD) or PDFs if you'd like a copy and don't have AutoCAD.
