DIY: 97-98 Cabin Air Filter Retrofit

Ok so I had been meaning to do this 100,000 miles ago, but never got around to doing it. I've had an itch to work on my car so I decided to finally do this. I learned a little bit from doing this so hopefully you all will get to take advantage from this little write up.

Here's a list of parts I bought:

80203-S30-003: Evaporator Lid
80291-S30-901: Filter (order 2 of these)
80292-S30-A01: Filter Frame (these 2 are different)
80297-S30-A01: Filter Frame
80293-S30-003: Filter Seal (order 2 of these)

Don't bother buying the evaporator cases I did that are pictured on the left.

Now to get started ...

Take out the glove box: Screw on the right hand side and 2 snap in stops on the sides. Lower the glove box then there will be 2 more screws holding it in place.

Remove metal cross beam & plastic cross beam: 2 10mm screws hold the metal one in place. Cut the plastic beam in the places shown below:

Cut the evaporator case as shown below in red: I had imagined a blank case with no guides to cut/dremel so I opted to buy a new evaporator case with the hole already cut out. It turns out the location is already marked and ready for use. Not sure why Honda didn't just add this for 97s and 98s. Take a sharp xacto knife and just cut the hole out! No need for a saw or dremel. The plastic is so thin because there's a cutout line already. This should make your install super clean. Once you cut out the hole just install your cabin filters and filter cover and you're done. Reinstall everything in reverse order.

Hope this helps some of you guys out with a 97 or 98! Enjoy!

Nice writeup.

Out of curiosity what prompted you wanting to change those filters? Were yours clogged or smelled funny or something?

I was mainly curious because I've never heard of anyone changing those before.

97s and 98s don't even have the filters. 99+ has them, but they use the same case, so this DIY is to add the cabin air filters that Honda decided to include with the 99+ models. I figure that's a good enough reason to want to do it.

You're supposed to change them out every 2 years, or atleast inspect them on that interval.
