Distributor question......?

Hi guys, I need a little help with my distributor. I have a 2000 Lude with a 96' JDM Type S swap. Now, my distributor is pooched and I need a new one so my question is, will any distributor work as long as it is OBD1, VTEC, internal coil, and for an H22 engine? Or do I need one that is specific to the Type S engine? Would anyone happen to know the part number to the distributor that I need? I need this information by tonight, because I ordered it today and if it is the wrong part, I still have to pay for it regardless because this automotive recycling place has a no refund policy on anything electrical. Im sorry for posting this question here, but, I asked the same question in my other thread but nobody replied to it and I need this info ASAP so thats why I posted this in a separate thread. So thank you all in advance and have a great day!!
Peace,
Jeff

First off, is your car converted to OBD1? The 5g prelude is OBD2 in both USA and Japan (despite a huge misconception that Japan is all OBD1) so unless you have converted to OBD1 then a OBD1 dizzy will not work. You'd need one for an H22a4 and the Type S engine hardly makes more power than a regular H22 to need a different distributor. Only difference between USDM and JDM is JDM engines have an internal coil distributor that won't even plug to your wiring harness.

You need to give more info on the car and swap.

I also highly doubt you need an entire distributor as they can be rebuilt unless something crazy happened to yours like it caught on fire. Sounds like you're just randomly throwing parts at it and a junkyard dizzy isn't really going to last without a overhaul either.

Hey there, thank you for the input!! Yes my car is converted to OBD1.... my dizzy is a TD89U and it has 1 plug.... apparently to get my dizzy rebuilt, it was gonna cost me $260 labour and taxes included. I cant afford that right now so I went with an auto recycler dizzy and it is apparently coming off a 96 Lude with internal coil... now Im just hoping it has 1 plug as well. What do you think? Any input is helpful and I thank you. I sound like such a newbie.... but this is my first Lude. Ive had alot of Civics with JDM B18C swaps so this H22A swap and dizzy thing is new to me! I thank you in advance my friend!! Oh ya... my dizzy has an internal coil and when the guy ordered it he made sure that the one they were sending was also an internal coil as I only have 1 plug too.

Now you also got me thinking.... Im not sure if you read my original thread to what started this whole problem so here is the link, have a read and lmk what you think, cuz if you dont think it would be the whole distributor, then I dont want to go spend all that loot right now as its xmas and I have kids.... My dizzy never caught fire, my mechanic just said I need a new distributor so I trusted his judgement... here it is:

HELP PLEASE!!! 00' Lude keeps dying!!

Well, the dizzy that I ordered wasnt the right one... of course, my luck.... it was a 2 plug and as I stated, I needed a 1 plug, so I decided to call up some JDM shops about a hundred miles away from where I live and I found the exact one I needed, a JDM Type S, TD89U.... for a great deal of $80!!! Thank God... Now, im gonna go throw it in and keep my fingers crossed that the problem is solved. Ill keep y'all posted!! Thank you all again for your input, it was greatly appreciated!
Peace,
Jeff

I don't see why you'd pay someone to rebuild the distributor, it's really easy. Of course one from a 96 wouldn't be right because 96+ is OBD2. To overhaul all you would need is a new cap, rotor and coil, only simple tools are needed and you can even do it without removing the distributor, just unplug it first.

The parts needed for the JDM internal coil distributor should be the same as a 96 civic ex according to what others have told me since I once thought about using it since I have one lying around.

Well, I installed the new distributor... she started up right away..... ran great and only stalled out on me once, but it sook about 10 cranks to get it restarted..... Then I drove it the rest of the way home with no problems?? I wont wonder too far from my home this time till Im 100% sure the problem is solved and it doesnt die again. She needs to regain my trust !!

Thanks guys!!

Well, it has an internal coil and the wires seem to be fine. I bought a new dizzy for it and it started, ran for a few miles, then died again.... so I put the other dizzy back on, it started up, ran for a few miles and died again as well. Now it wont start at all. Im so effin peeved off right now, and I dont have the $$ to be screwing around. Unless I can find someone with an OBD1 diagnostic reader, I wont find out what the problem is.
