difference between an h22 shortblock/longblock

i decided i'd like to learn how a motor works a while back and i feel finally i've got a solid grasp on the mechanisms in regards to a combustion engine. my next step is simply taking one apart and putting it back together feeling that the best way to learn how something works is to see for myself. the only problem is i have my one and only car so pulling the motor simply for discovery is kind of out of the question. so i figure i'll probably buy an entire motor just for the hell of it and take it apart.

thats all fine and dandy, i can acquire an h22a4 with fair ease and i know the general differences between h series engines but then i came across the term shortblock and longblock. i understand the concept of shortblock/longblock but i though all honda x-series blocks were identical in spec. (overall dimensions).

I just bought a h22a4 long block....it came with no tranny or ecu, and no other peripherals, just the block and the head with distributor. Ihave heard of people selling "short blocks" but they are only the blocks, no head, no trans, no peripherals whatso ever. However, if you look at the B series, DART sell a short block and a tall block with the difference being the tall block having the same stroke as a b20 whereas the shortblock is the equal to the b18. I have not ever heard of another kind of block on the H series as it already has a large stroke and bigger bore. I do know you can stroke them and re sleeve them to make them larger but as for having a whole new block made...

^^ stroke has nothing to do with being a long or a short block.

in the industry i cant even get a correct answer to this other than a consensus that.

SHORT BLOCK = just block
LONG BLOCK = Block and Head
COMPLETE = block, head, tranny, IM, & sensors

there are various degrees of in between obviously.

Ya, that's what Ive always understood it to mean. Obviously different engines/configurations may change categories a little.
