Crank pulley bolt WOES! *Not your typical "how to remove" post*

To get you up to speed, I have an H22a4 in my 95 Si. My crank pulley fell off and the bolt sheared in half inside the crank. I've since had it drilled out and retapped the bolt hole.

Now here's my dilemma. I found out that the KEY itself broke in half and ripped a nice groove in the crank pulley. We removed whatever was left of the key and bought a new one. I'm also using my H23a1 crank pulley too now, since the H22a4 pulley is trashed. (Which I should have done loong ago when I did this swap)

And here's where I'm stuck at. I went in to put everything back in when I noticed that the holes that the little key goes into is OFF! So checking my manual, I'm pretty sure the lower timing sprocket is off, as well as the crank. (The timing sprocket hole is @ 12 0'clock, and the crank hole is at 3 o'clock) I can't install anything w/o resetting everything to TDC. But should I just turn the crank counterclockwise to align the hole for the key and install the rest of the pulley? Or how do I check if everything is aligned correctly? I really don't want to move anything, in fear of throwing off timing and smacking a valve or something. Any ideas?

Man, I love working on this car. If it's not one thing, it's another!

Take off you valve cover and set your cams to tdc if they are not there already. THen use a long peice of stiff wire (or a really long screwdriver) into #1 cylinder and slowly turn the crank clockwise unitll its at top dead center. Hopefully the marks on the crank match whats on the block.

Why not just use the timing mark on the flywheel to set the crank to TDC?

The crank will rotate around twice in one rotation of the cams. Try it sometime with the belt on. It will pass the crank mark on the #1 top dead center AND the #1 bottom dead center. The crank timing gear is half the size that the cams are for a reason.

That would be so much easier if I had a stock flywheel. But the ClutchMaster 8lb flywheel I have doesn't seem to have any marks on it? Go figure?....

So, should I just rotate the crank and pray everything lines up? Or am I better off removing the whole timing belt and resetting everything again? I'm afraid I already know the answer to that...

...which is why I had it towed to a shop. LOL! I'm also changing the timing belt (only 40k on it, but it's better to have it done now) and the waterpump replaced. Man, this better the LAST thing to happen to this car!...or else it's going on AutoTrader!
