Could it be the tensioner, or a knocking rod?

Hey guys, i have 98 prelude with 119k always changed with mobil 1 oil and maintained to the fullest. Just recently put a new clutch in, and around 98k miles i replace the timing belt, and balanceshaft belt. one thing i didnt change is the tensioner... now. my problem is i noticed when i was driving my car it made a knocking type sound. it only happens whenever you rev the car around 2500- 3k rpm and drop. one shop here in the DFW area told me it was a rod knocking, another OG in the game told me it was the tensioner... just wondering if anyone has had this problem and if the rod was knoking or crank bearing wouldnt it be a consistent sound? Any advice or help is GREATLY appreciated!

thanks again,
Chris

a sound clip would help a whole lot here. I don't think it would be the timing belt tensioner though.

I had the same thing going on right after the clutch was replaced and it turned out to be a bent clutch fork that must have happened on the install. I had it replaced and the knocking stopped.

I have what sounds to be rod knock coming from the cylinder closest to the tranny on my H22A4. If it's the tensioner it would be coming from the timing belt area. From doing some reading, alot of people seem to be having rod knock issues with the h22, is this regarded to/known as a common problem? BTW mine knocks during start up, and between 2000-3500rpm, and is definately coming from the block area, not valvetrain. Hoping to have a JDM H22A in the car bye the end of march.

The sound you are hearing is coming from your catalytic converter, one of the 2 elements has come loose.

Pull the 3 front and the 3 rear bolts and remove the cat. Look at both ends of the removed cat and see which element is loose and broken. Remove only the loose/broken element by breaking it into smaller pieces. Install the cat back in place.

Pressure holds the element in place as you accelerate, and when you let off, ~ 2500 rpm, you get back pressure the makes the loose element rattle/knock. The car will perform and smog the same with only one element.

Unfortunately in my case it's the bottom end that's gone, I'm just not sure what's wrong until I rip it apart. I wish it had been my cat or a tensioner.
