clutch problems.

ive been researching for the past week because my 1998 honda prelude wont go into any gears sometimes.

i looked at the slave and master cylinder and it appears to look good. no leaks and it has a good amount of dot 3.

i did some test were id floor it in 5th gear doing 50 mph but it would pull without slipping.

is there like a transmission test that i could do? when the car is not running it goes into all the gears fine.

sometimes when im going like 40mph and im bout to change it to 4th it wont let me but it will get out of 3rd easily.

this is the only car i have! i love my prelude to death but this problem is starting to become a big deal when im at a green light for 2-3 minutes trying to put it into gear with cars behind me honkin me to death.

thanks for any of the help.

You should replace your clutch. I had rivets let go on mine and it started as randomly not letting me put the car in a certain gear to locking me out of all of them. I pulled it apart and my clutch disc was only held together by one rivet...

If not, synchros might be bad.

What's up guys, thanks for the help. After researching online i came across somebody with the same problem i had and he advised to check the slave piston and the clutch pump for leaks before anything else. I did that and they are fine, however i found that my clutch wasn't fully disengaging when I applied pressure with my foot so I elevated the disengaging point by turning the shaft in the clutch pump and that fixed the problem. so i am happy to inform that i have been driving for two days now with no problems. thanks again for the help. that goes to proof that when u don't know how to fix something start for the easiest and less complicated :-)

When my clutch was separating I adjusted the pedal too. It gave me another couple weeks before it finally let go... I'm not saying this is what your issue is but just keep it in mind.

Is your throw out beating making any noise? When mine was going I couldn't use 1st 3rd 4th would try to grind, and 5th was almost impossible. Prolly time to just replace your clutch. Are you able to drive the car floating the gears(not using the clutch) without problem?

Gow are you doing! It is not making any noise. Although I noticed when the tranny gets hot it is somewhat harder to change gear and also found out that i have an oil leak in between the motor and tranny. I am not sure if it is transmission fluid or motor oil.
That could also be part of my problem. If the clutch is contaminated with oil then a malfunction can occur. I am installing my turbo this week so i will take the tranny down once I finish with my turbo and I will definitely know what the problem is. i will keep u posted.

You'd be able to tell if it was oil or trans fluid.....

it was motor oil. the tranny has not given me any more trouble every since I adjusted the clutch pedal. My car is a Auto swap so the clutch pedal is missing the top bolt and the whole base moves when I step on it. that's why I needed to adjust the pedal. now i need to find a away to secure the top bold of the clutch to the car.

Nice I had the same problem where I couldn't even go into gears at times so I would have to kept pushing and releasing the clutch until it would finally let me go into gears. Sometimes it would even grind. There would also be times when I put my car into neutral and the gear is still engaged for a few seconds. I was terrified hoping its not the synchro or the whole tranny itself. I started with the basics like you with the master and slave sylinders and clutch pedal adjustmenrs. Nothing work so I dropped the tranny and luckily it turned out to be my clutch and throw out bearing was done. One of the springs on the clutch also popped off as well.
