Those of you who had this problem fixed, did you have your upper or lower control arm replaced? Or both?

I am asking b/c I brought my car in to the dealership today to have it checked out again. We couldn't reproduce the clunking sound so they weren't gonna do anything. However, after negotiating with them for a while and mentioned this thread, they've decided to order the part for me. So now I need to know which part to have them order. Please help!!

I have this too .... from driver's side for me. Have told dealer twice, they said they could not reproduce. Maybe 3 times a charm.

M 2001 clunks in cold weather too...I hear mine more when I'm turning at slow speeds...my fix? Turn the volume up on the stereo and the clunking noise mysteriously disappears...Huh? Did you say something?

Mine too. Whenever its around 20 deg in Baltimore, I hear a clunking/popping noise from the front driver's side suspension when starting from a stop and under hard braking. When it warms up its gone, annoying but I guess I'll live with it since I'm not alone.

Mine has gotten worse. The temperature kepts dropping here too, so it's really bad. I'm planning to do an entire bushing replacement anyways, so I'm not going to bring it to the dealership.

Mine is doing this too, can you guys feel this through the steering wheel/pedals?

I've checked my calipers/discs and shocks, each of which looks fine.

I had the engine and gearbox mounts checked too. My mechanic says the the front mount will need replacing soon and its a possible cause, but when driving it feels like its down by my right foot (RHD lude)

I'm replacing my bushes in the next few weeks (hyperflex kit) so I'll let you know if it sorts the problem out

Man...... I hear alot of problems...... and no solutions. I am not sure of the poping/clunking noise (I have it and haven't fixed it), but the creaking is the stabilizer bushings.

The stabilizer (sway) bar is bolted to the lower control arms and runs through two U brackets with rubber bushings. These are the pests you are trying to kill. Take off the u-brackets (2 bolts each), clean up with some soap & water and put in some silicone paste (smear on and wipe off exess so there is a thin film). Unbolt only one at a time and it makes it easier to put back together.

So I get the clunk too, but I live in Tx so it's always over 65 here. I am upgrading my suspension soon (hopefully with a couple of fellow luders), so is there something we can do while we replace my shocks/springs? What exactly should I look for in the control arms? I wish KHILGERS would have helped out a little more, but oh well. Thanks for the info.

I had an occasional clunk that I thought was in the rear and I thought was a winter problem. Turned out to be a loose link on the front sway bar, where the end ties to the frame. When I inspectioned it all looked OK, but since it is usual under some load, I never could find it until I was swapping sway bars.

I assume you've put a wrench on everything, even if it looked OK.

FOR ALL WHO HAVE FRONT END CLUNK ON BUMPS AND STRAIGHTAWAYS , I have figured it out! after u check all your bushings ball joints tie rods and stabalizer links and all checks well , This is the problem it is your front radius rod bushings! If you have replaced them with after market bushings the sleeve is too long! trust me the bushings should sit touching each other on the rod! if not u will get a clunk!!! Believe me!! I spent 3 weeks trying to figure this out!
I AM MORE THEN 100% THAT THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM ! IF ALL CHECKS WELL iE. BALLJOINTS TIE RODS ETC...
