Changing gauge "motors"

Is it possible to swap in a used motor for an rpm gauge assembly?
I have my old auto cluster and supposedly my rpm gauge is getting the incorrect reading so it must be the motor right? I began disassembling the cluster and realized the needle would have to be pulled from the motor to be taken apart and swapped out, but does anyone know if they will still work afterward? Don't wanna risk going through the trouble to make things worse. Thanks in advance
