CEL code 80

My 98 SH threw a Code 80 (8 long flashes) on the way back from school. I did a search and only one thread popped up about CEL code 80. Is it the EGR valve/line?

The damn link to toronto page isn't working.

EDIT: I hope it's not that cuz that valve is $100!!!

Looks like you have a problem with your EGR valve. Just clean that out and see what happens.

Here is another site you can find the codes

i cleaned my valve a week ago, i was throwing a code too. i took it off, got a wire brush, some pipe cleaners, aond some carb cleaner. just take the EGR off and clean that, then i took the pipe cleaners and stuck them in the holes in the intake manifold, just do that a bunch of times and it will help clean it out. i twisted 4 pipe cleaners together so it would be thicker to clean out hte holes better. Use alot of carb cleaner when your doing it, it helps break down all that gunk.

What all did you have to take off to get inside the intake manifold?

just the EGR valve, its 2 nuts, a hose and a clip for the electronics, it takes about 5 min to take it off, DONT DROP THE NUTS, its a PITA to find them, it did it 2x, it sucks. when you take the EGR off you will see the holes that i am talking about.

Did you dip the pipe cleaners in carb cleaner and then scrub?

So the carb cleaner doesn't hurt anything in the EGR process? It all needs to evaporate before reinstalling everything, right?

Ok, one last thing. How the hell did you get to those 2 nuts?? I can't fit a socket wrench in there and I don't have any room to torque it with a wrench. Did you take the VTEC solenoid off to get to it?

EDIT: What if some of that gunk in those holes gets into the combustion chamber?

Geez, how small? There's only about an inch of clearance to work with between the nut and the EGR lip. My main problem is getting the nut off closest to the engine block.

or use a swivel head on your ratchet to get some torque at an angle...

SlowSi - I totally feel your pain. Last year I started getting the same code and after reading up, tried to do this. Unfortunately, I've only got a very basic set of tools, and I couldn't do it with sockets or regular wrenches, so ultimately no dice. While I was waiting for a more opportune moment to try again, the CEL went out on its own! This was after like one or two months of continuous CEL, so no mistake. About a year later it came on again for like a week, but it's gone again now. Maybe I just have a marginal case? Dunno, but I passed cali smog, so I'm not going to mess with it until I have to.
