CAT with a rattle.

My stock CAT is rattling bad. Sounds like the core broke.

What is the best replacement CAT/exhaust for a 2001?

you sure it's not rattling against the heat shields underneath the car?

and the best replacement would be OEM. imho.

If you want stock cat OEM is the best, obviously. But if you have or will be upgrading the exhaust, high flow cat. I've heard nothing but good things about random technology's cat, a little pricey though. I bought a magnaflow high flow cat but haven't put it on yet so I can't say weather or not it's good.

Don't get a test pipe, the gains are minimal to none( I just looked at a comparison dyno chart the other day). No cat makes your car stink and you will almost always get a CEL.

^ it's true that gains are minimal from highflow cat -> test pipe, but when we do all sorts of things in order to get just a few more hp like underdrive pullies, why not do a test pipe as well.

another factor for me deciding this is lower cost.

the greatest down side is probably excessive noise, but my exhaust is very quiet at the moment, and even if the test pipe doubles the sound it'll still be ok for me.

regarding error codes, hooking up a spark plug defouler to the o2 sensor bung in the test pipe seems to eliminate problems w/ CELS. i remember reading this in a thread.

You can also gut out your cat as a temporary fix.

No test pipe, just a real CAT and maybe a SS CATback.

I hope it is a heat shield but it sounds heavy, like a core, no CEL though.
I will get under it and check...... wishful thinking.

I have a 2.5, large capacity, Thermal research CAT on my turbo miata which has been awesome, but they dont have a bolt on for the lude......yet

I will look at the r t CAT

thanks.

If you really like Thermal Research see if a muffler shop could weld on some flanges on a universal cat so it would be bolt on.

Random technology is very good as far as quality, so I hear. Like I said earlier I got a magnaflow cat, mostly for the fact its inlet is 2.5" not 2" like others.
