Can someone explain coilovers

What is the difference between coilovers and spring/shocks? From some pictures that I have seen, it looks like coilovers combine the two? Can someone give me a more precise definition of the two. Thanks again for your help.

spring and shock combo is usually a progressive rate spring and a standard stock or stock look shock (like tokico, koni, KYB) The hight is set and cannot be changed, for the most part.

On a coilover system it is usually height adjustable with a threaded body and perch that you "spin" up and down the threaded body to adjust the ride height.

thats just the basics

so would coilovers or spring/shock be the better buy?

I have heard that AYB shocks are adjustable? So those shocks, just wouldn't be as adjustable as a coilover system?

depends on what you want to. if you just wanna lower your car and it look and handle better, without spending too much money you can go with a set of springs and shocks. U can get this setup for like $500 for a set of H&R sport springs and KYB shocks.

If you want height adjustability and dampening adjustability, and overall better performance get a set of coilovers. Be prepared to spend over $1000 for a set of good coilovers.

or go and get the inbetween setup. A set of Ground Control, or Skunk2 coilover adapters. Its basically a coilover sleve u put on a standard shock. Its is height adjustable, and depending on what shock u get it can be dampening adjustable also. This costs about $700 for a set of Ground controls and Koni shocks. I am running This setup and i like it a lot.

The KYB shocks are only rebound adjustable not height adjustable, If you want springs and height adjustability, Get the Koni sport shocks, they have an adjustable perch in 10mm increments. But the whole assembly has to be taken apart to be adjusted.

dude, thanks for the great information. I appreciate you taking the time to explain things to me.

Here is what I am looking to do, improve handling but I do not want to lower it more than 1". I won't need height adjustability but I will need something that will take a beating with poor roads yet handle extreme cornering. What would you suggest?

I would suggest springs then man I think tanabe makes a 1" drop someone correct me if i am wrong. I wouldn't waist my $ if u just want 1" or less on coilovers

I would suggest a set of KYB AGX adjustable shocks, and either H&R sport, Neuspeed sport, Tanabe super H, and Eibach prokit. Everyone using these springs likes them a lot. H&R sport would probably be my spring of choice.

Only 1"?? Why would you even consider wasting your money on coil overs then?? I just bought some H&R sports the other day, after getting days worth of opinions, I think these are your best choice. My next choice would have been Eibach pro-kit. Both have a drop a lil' over an 1".

well there are two kinds of adjustable shocks...
some let you adjust the height (intially only, once they are on your car thats it you have to take them totally off again if you want to adjust the height)
and the other adjusting is dampening adjustment... it lets you make the ride and stiffer or softer depending upon your need (this can usually be done with the shocks still on the car)
