If your '97 is a base model I don't see why not.

I just put (well had my uncle swap since hes a mechanic and well im not) an H22, in my 2001 base (H22a4) and to do the swap there are things that must be pulled off the old engine and put on the new one, we had to swap over the crank sensor, oil pump (to get the crank sensor to have proper mounting points), and the pulley associated with that because the older ones dont have the spots on the pulley that triger the crank sensor. im not sure what else had to be done but i remember him mentioning something about the fuel rails.

As long as you have the old engine you should have all the parts needed to get the new one into your car tho, just keep looking to see what else need to be swapped, sorry my list is incomplete but i hope this helps

also the new engine i believe was obd1, while mine was obd2, and i believe the differeance lies with swapping the original wireing harness over to the new engine. only thing i have found (didnt do heavy research) that changes with obd1 vs obd2 is that there is an o2 sensor before AND after the cat, not just before, or at least thats what some website listed
