can i run a 17x8 rim without rubbing?

I was looking at some wheels and i have a choice of either 17x7 or 17x8. Ideally i'd like to get 17x7.5 but that's not an alternative. Would it be possible for me to run 17x8 with a 45mm offset on 215-45-17 tires and not have problems with rubbing?

Yes, that setup could fit with the proper fender adjustments, but your biggest problem is going to be replacing the cracked rims you're going to get from not using a wide enough tire. A 215 width tire will barely cover the mid-section of an 8" wide wheel, let alone the outter lips. An ideal setup would consist of a 235 width tire on a 17X8 size wheel. With a 45mm offset you won't have a problem with the front, but the rear fenders will require rolling depending on how low you are. I've gone through this before with 18X8 wheels and 235 width tires, and while it's not easy to pull off, it really is necessary if you want rim protection. The 17X7 wheel seems a better fit for the tire size you want.

I think that you have a better chance of the tires rubbing with a 215/45-17 tire than a 215/40-17 tire. The 45 series tire has a sidewall that is 96.75mm tall. The 40 series tire is 86mm tall. My wheels are 17x8, +48mm offset, with a 215/40-17 tire. The tires dont rub at the stock ride height (not lowered yet), and I have not heard any rubbing noises at near full lock. The only time Ive had a tire rub on my car is with my race tires on the stock wheels, and I have the marks in the wheel wells to prove it! Personally, I would rather have a 7 inch wide wheel with a 215/40-17 tire. After doing the calcs, a 235/40-17 would fit great, but I dont know if it would rub or not. In all this, please keep in mind that between manufacturers, the widths arent exactly the same. My Kumho's seem a bit narrow on these wheels, I think Yokohama A520's would be just about perfect.
