Cam gears control the rate at which the valves inject fuel and dispel exhaust in the cylinder. As far as adustable cam gears is concerned, its kind of the way VTEC works. Most cam shafts have a small size lobe (for low RPMs, it holds the valves open at a rate that is ideal for low speeds) and a large size lobe(for high RPMs, it holds the valves open at a rate ideal for high speeds). Well, a VTEC camshaft has a LARGE lobe (Larger than the high rpm lobe). Also, the VTEC cam lobe is in between the small rpm and large rpm lobes. When car engines run at high rpms, the valves need to stay open alot longer to let more air and fuel into the cylinder. When VTEC engages, the valves used for the low rpms and high rpms are locked in sequence with the large VTEC lobe. That is why your engine gets that sudden boost of power, and that is also why you hear the distinctive snarl from the exhaust. So, just think of VTEC as a special cam shaft. Thats all it really is.

Cam Gears allow you to either advance or retard the exhaust or intake cams.
