burnt rubber smell

Hi,

I have a 2001 fifth gen with 31,000 miles. Over the last few days, I have noticed a burnt rubber smell, mostly when driven a few minutes beyond 4,000RPM (70+ MPH). Valves are starting to tap a little and my mechanic told me that it could wait unil next year, at which time he would also replace the timing belt. I only drive the car 4-5,000 miles per year.

I use synthetic oil and I cannot locate any leaks, even from the cam seal, which were redone 2 year ago. Could my belt be sending me a signal...

Is your alternator locking up, ps pump, ac condensor? Maybe one of your pullies is locking up, causing a belt to slip and burn
Also, could be your clutch slipping. They smell kinda bad when they slip and burn, but I'd say a clutch smells more like burning onions, than burning rubber.
Maybe something is stuck in your wheelwell, rubbing a tire. Hahah
I dunno. You just gotta look around for something rubbing or leaking.
