Boring the cylinders

I searched on this for a while and I am still very confused. Can our cylinders be bored without sleeving. I know if you want to use forged pistons you have to sleeve the block do to an aluminum bore, but what about oem pistons? Can they bore our cylinders to 88mm please help.
