Black Smoke On Hard Acceleration

Ok everyone needs to read this; I was,am having a problem with black smoke and soot coming out of my exhaust at full throttle I took this problem to honda and they said its normal,ok I took it home and thought no it's not normal. To make a long,long story short this is what they gave me. SERVICE NEWS dated APRIL 01
BLACK SMOKE ON HARD ACCELERATION:'97-01 PRELUDE
On '97-01 Preludes, at wide open throttle, you may see what looks like black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. That smoke is just soot in the exhaust system. It's a normal characteristic and not a reason for concern. This soot also collects on the rear bumper because of the aerodynamic turbulence behind the vehicle.
And do you know what the lady said when i called customer realtions to ask if honda is going to fix the problem?....She said well, it's a honda honda needs to fix this problem i know im not the only one out there with this problem.Please call customer relations @ 1-800-999-1009 with your vin# this is not normal i got my car new 01 lude.

Is your lude an oil burner? If so, then that is where it is all coming from.

Mine too

I was actually going to post the same thing.Mine has a blueish smoke @ full throttle and my friends 96 tl does it too.Mine also burns about 1qt of oil every 1.5-2 months.I hope there is a fix for this, I still am under my warentee for about 31k.I know that our high output engines just burn oil, but I would hope that there would be a way to fix that black smoke from comming out and making us look bad.

IF the smoke is BLACK then that is ok/good. What that means is that the engine runns rich (extra fuel) that is what you see when you go full throttle. Your fuel system is duumping fuel into the engine.
If you have blue'ish smoke then that is Oil. Not that good .
All the DOHC VTEC engines use oil. My friends B16 does also. Not worry to much about it, just keep the oil level up. Normal usage is arround 1 quart per 3,000miles.

black is fine, our cars run rich (there is more fuel than necessary) but it shouldnt cause you any problems with the engine. it will just make yuor exhaust uglie as hell. if it really bothers you get a a/f controller and lean out your mixture (get some professionals to do this).

That's a pretty heavy weight oil youre using there. I know you want to stop the oil burning, but isnt that a bit extreme? As far as the smoke, our cars run rich. You could lean it out as okieraver suggests, and it wouldnt do it as much, or possibly eliminate it completely. My 2001 does it too, and there is some soot buildup on the back of the car (small specks), but keeping a coat of wax on it helps a bit, as does not going too long between wahses. I dont think your cat is going to be plugged up or damaged by this, unless your car is running so rich that your catalytic converter overheats and starts to break down. My car has over 30K miles, and its fine.

Eek! Do your lude a favor and drain that oil. You need 5w30 to properly lubricate the h22a.

i had 5-30 in it and i think i was burnning it to fast to keep up.
I'm trying to find a middle here.I run my car hard so i thought 15-50 would be fine.

i do not believe that the soot will build up enough to come even close to clogging anything throughout your catback. if it is getting even close to that point something is definately wrong, but i have 105k on my 5th gen and although my tips are pretty dirty there is no sign of any clogging. i couldnt tell you what my cat converter looks like on the inside but from the smell i doubt there is anything irregular. you have to accept the fact that you have a higher revving engine with 'race' cams in it. your gonna be outputing a lot more air/fuel with the VTEC system (which is essentially a way for your car to breathe more air without sacrificing low end torque). as to your oil burning, i believe that is part of the operating cost of a lude. its not unusual for our cars to burn oil and having heavier oil isnt necessarily the best way to go fix it. i believe heavier oil makes your engine work harder and actually reduces power (however marginal).

mickey;
You live in CA so the heavier weight oil should be ok, but I would suggest that you switch back to a 10w40 part synth
