Better gas mileage

this past week i tried something...while i was at pep boys i saw some STP gas treatment...it was on sale for like 99 cents or around there so i bought some...the next morning i went and got gas at Shell (87 octane: gas expensive) and used a bottle of the gas treatment...ive noticed a big jump in my gas mileage...i average about 22-23 mpg...when i got gas today i calculated how much i was getting and with the additive i got 28mpg!!!! and i vtec'd more often than any other time...maybe it would be a freak coincidence but imma try it the next time around and see if i can get the same numbers

that's pretty cool
so what is it exactly?
a fuel injector cleaner?

and WHY are you putting 87 OCTANE into your prelude?!?!?!

shouldn't you be putting 91 or 93?!?!?!

it might be a coincidence, but you really shouldn't be using 87 octane for your lude.

i think the computer in teh car knows when you put sh*tty gas into the car and it compensates for it.. like it not giving you all the performance that you would come to expect... also.. it really depends on where you drive and how long and everything like that..

i average around 24 mpg on my 01 and just for kicks.. i clean my intake filter, filled up with 93 octane and drove to work.. all highway.. then i filled up and was like omg.. 32 mpg

so it wasn't really fair cause i just drove highway and then filled up again.. too many variables to consider.. like outside air temp, speed on highway and all that good stuff

also.. there's a reason why things cost what they do.. if you using a 99 cent product over one that cost $10.. there's a lot of differance.. i know you pay a little for a name brand and things such as that and yes.. sometimes there are better products that cost less then the brand name stuff.. all i'm saying is you get what you pay for

anywho... congrats on the gain in mpg...

please put over 91 oct back in your lude

=)

you're losing a lot of mileage from the 87octane alone

yea, stick with 91 octane or higher...and 99% of the people on this board will tell you that any gas/oil treatment/additive is just a waste of money.

WHOA...really?

A manual didn't come with my car, so I didn't know that.
I'm surprised because the tach says Premium Only.

According to the manual, what is recommended? 91 or 93...right?
What does it say about the 87?

The owner's manual recommends 91 or higher. 91 is perfectly fine.

Just a side note: yes, the ecu will compensate for lower octane, but it does not know what octane you have put in the car. If you run a lower octane, and there is detonation because of it, then the ecu will retard timing. In my personal opinion, this is not a good long term situation. Detonation bad.

hahah yea i know about the 87 octane gas but poor college student here and i had to stick with it ever since 87 gas cost over $2.00 a gallon over here in the bay area....i dont think its just coincidence...i did it again this week did everything the same and refilled last nite...calculated it and i got 27.8 mpg with a little more city driving in SFO...i will get back up to 91 octane the following times and do the same treatment again and see the results...but im pretty happy with what my mileage is turning out to be.... plus the additive is STP GAS TREATMENT

i would think having lower octane gas would give you better mileage..just cuz the higher octane would burn off cleaner. since higher octane also gives you better performance i would think it using up more gas. i dunno i'm just talking outta my ass...but that was from experience in a civic.

just a few points:

-yes, you would get better mileage with lower octane...IF AND ONLY IF the car didn't detonate when you put it in, but it WILL and your car WILL (hopefully) pull timing when it senses the detonation, this is why it is BAD to put lower octane into your car, the ecu is reactive, not psychic; it will only pull timing when it senses detonation, which in the long run is very very bad

-higher octane burns cleaner not because its higher, but its because thats what our engines were designed for, with lower octane you're engine is pulling timing, which means it'll have a less efficient combustion, and therefore more wasted gas will result in that.

-higher octane gives you better performance up to a point. and thats only because our cars were designed for a certain octane, and when you run a lower octane, it is BAD. It's rumored that our cars benefit slightly from running 93 octane, since thats what is available in japan. (sucks for us cali people )

-and yup you're talking out of your ass

civic != prelude

ShadowLude: in short, pony up the cash for 91 octane, otherwise you'd pay much much more for an engine rebuild in the long run. I wouldn't be surprised if that STP gas treatment was nothing more than some octane booster, and if you're going to buy that stuff again, just go and buy some toulene instead....cheaper

I find this with my lude, if I put the crappy gas in I get about 300 out of a tank for £30, the more expensive gas (98) I get 360

I just did it with the gas treatment plus 91 octane gas...got 28.7 mpg...yea i know im hurting her with lower octane but had to do it with the sudden jump in gas prices...one day 91 was at 1.89/gallon 2 days later it was up to 2.29!!!! Yea there is much difference with different octanes...less gurgle out the exhaust, engine sounds more fluid and smooth.
