Bad dampers?

I recentley started hearing a pop-like sound from my back right wheel area. It was basically only on hard bumps and it made the same noise pretty much everytime. So, I took it in and found out it was a damper and the service guy told me the damper wasn't "broken" but it was just making a funny noise for some reason. So, he suggested that since it was $135 to install the $8 damper I should save my money. So, I asked him what would happen if I didn't get it done, he said "nothing"...does this sound right? It's not under warranty cause my car was bought used with a extended service warranty that covers about everything cept the damper and some other basic stuff. So, if this breaks, will it mess up my suspension in any way? I wonder if it does do damage, will my warranty cover that even though the guy said NOT to do it, and it would be ok? All the major stuff is covered so hopefully. But, does anyone have any opinion/experience with a situation like this? Or had a bad damper? Thanks ALOT!

Ps. I know honda is too much, so I can get it done from a mechanic friend for $50 or so...I guess I wonder if it's vital at this time. (I have no money!)

Oh yeah, the car drives fine and turns fine.

seens like the infamous 'shock knock' which is common in our ludes. there is a remedy online somewhere to get rid of that clunking sound when going over a bump..try doing a seach for it...I belive it is self-doable...
