^^ Yup... ATTS is tricky

That shaft that connects the tranny to the ATTS unit, there are two sets of splines that you need to line up, and the ATTS unit has to be perfectly lined up, or else you will hate the world.

I have never had any trouble with the ATTS unit itself. It helps to have someone rotate the tranny/motor with the tranny in gear while you try to put the unit back in.

^^ I was doing the clutch on my type-sh back in like 2001 and didn't have an experience help with me, and I was trying to get the ATTS unit lined up with the 2 sets of splines, and I think it was tilted a little bit, and got jammed up. Took me a while to get it undone, and back in the car.

I'm glad I'll never have to do another ever again!

Got the ATTS back in, didn't think it was too tough - at least, compared to taking it out. Even getting the breather hose back on the top I thought was pretty easy - just jacked it up halfway, and reached in from the passenger side fender. Running the coolant lines back up through was trickiest part.

Anyway, I'm on the home stretch now. Just need to reassembly the tranny mount, shifter cables, and misc. brackets & wiring, and I'm basically done. Got one ball joint that's giving me a hard time, threads got smashed or something during disassembly, so the joint is turning in the socket when I try and torque the castle nut back on.

Oh, and then the stupid bolts on the cat. Gonna have to take it in to a shop to get them torched out before I can hook the lower header back up . . . that's gonna be a noisy trip.

The cat bolts can be punched out with a hammer.

They are pressed in the backside of the cat... so if you had cut the bolts off, and just have little stubs sticking out, just beat on them a bit, and they should pop right out.

It helps to put a nut on them first (one you don't want to use again). You can also usually rig up something with a bench vise to do this (like a socket around the stud).

Yeah - I was hammering on them with a punch, and got one out that way. The other two I couldn't get out, so I took a grinding wheel to the backside to clear out the rust - then started hammering away again. Finally called it quits when the flanges started to bend . . .

At this point it's worth it to pay a few bucks for a shop to just take a plasma torch to 'em.
