I thought about that.... but I read somewhere and thought that 4th gear was overdrive.... but then I read somewhere that Preludes 4th gear is a real 4th gear (no OD)... and then I read somewhere that auto 5th gen Ludes come with overdrive, but then I read somewhere that they didn't......

I'm confused.......

I say to hell with it all, where did you read this at? Tomorrow I'll call the Honda dealership and confirm if it is or isn't!

Please do.... and let me know....

When I bought the car... the paperwork said something like 4 speed automatic with overdrive and sportshift blah blah blah....

But I think on Honda's website.... it only says 4 speed auto with Sportshift.....

On most cars, 4th gear is overdrive..... sooooo, is 4th gear overdrive on our car.... or is there some type of automatic OD that we don't know about that is somewhat like a 5th gear????

And if not....why in the hell do my RPM's drop in 4th gear...?!?!??!??

Anyone know anything about this...??!?!?

Hey I don't know if u guys remember one of my posts a lil while back, I was talking about the 3-4 shift and why it takes so long for our SS trannies to engage into 4th, and I was guessing that the reason behind that was the gearing.....

I think it may also applies to what u are wondering about.... That the gap between 3rd and 4th gear is very big, that's why the sudden power loss is so noticable......

Any other ideas??

BTW, does this happen to the 5spd guys? Is there also a sudden loss in power from 4-5?

The guy I spoke to did not designate 4th as an overdrive gear yet stated that our vehicles do have overdrive, which means to me when my rpm's drop that is the overdrive kicking in. Sorry but I don't know when it does exactly.

I am not sure how everyone drives... but if I race, my SS never falls out of vtec once engaged. And I have no VAFC, although I will have one in my possesion end of this week. Just shift a hair before redline and you won't even fallout of vtec when you shift into 2nd gear.

Overdrive is technically determined by whether or not the engine spins fewer times by the wheels. In the manual, 5th gear is overdrive. In most 5-speed cars, 5th is an overdrive. In autos, 4th is usually overdrive.

Most autos come with an overdrive limit/cut switch to allow you to tow or pull a load on a highway or up a hill w/o the tranny getting "confused" and toggling in and out. In older (simple) trannies, this was a problem as they switched a certain speed/load with little or no hysteresis... thus you could drive at a certain speed/load on the highway and it would toggle in and out.

The loss of power is likely the gear ratio, as in most autos there is a large "hole" between 2-3 or 3-4, depending on design. The SS was designed for convenience, not top speed testing, 1/4 mile times, or all-out acceleration. I'd have to look at the ratios, but I'm betting there's just a larger gap between those gears in the SS than others.

The 5 speed does not have this problem.
