Air Intake Crackdown...

I've read dozens and dozens of threads on intake systems, opinions, dyno results and all kinds of back and forth ranting on how the aftermarket intakes and OEM intakes perform.

Sound isn't a concern, so I'll get that out of the way.

I did the typical AEM Short-Ram swap from the stock USDM intake setup and while the sound changed, I did notice a slight decrease in low-end torque just from the driver's seat.

I'm contemplating changing back to the stock intake, but am looking at other options that will provide some more low-end gains.

I do know that the aluminum AEM tubing does not reject engine bay heat anywhere near as well as the stock setup.

I've looked at the JDM Type-S intake setup and it seems that the psuedo-ovalled section of intake is meant to provide more airflow volume. The air tends to flow down the inner sides of a tube, not through the middle. So, a ovalled tube has more internal airflow volume compaired to a round tube.

So far as I know, the only manufacturer who makes a mandrel-bent equivalent in plastic is Iceman. Is this right?

Or, maybe I could make something using the bellows portion of the JDM intake (portion that goes between the throttle body and filter box) and putting on a short pipe extension so I can fit a K&N style filter on the end with a AirForce or Pre-Charger wrap.

I know there are a ton of threads, but I'd like some experienced input, with results if possible. Ultimately, you want to keep the intake air temps as low as possible, provide as much air volume as the engine needs to perform at it's best and not cost a arm and a leg to do so

It's all a tradeoff... but theoretically, a plastic Iceman SRI or CAI should be your most effective intake.

my iceman rules... take your car out on a summer night, beat the hell out of it for 45 mins, pop your hood, everything else will be scorching hot and the intake will be warm, at worst. way way better than any other intake as far as heat resistance goes and probably one of the best as far as performance goes too because of it's plastic design.

friend switched from aem cai to iceman, he's lovin it. just wished the carb sticker didn't wear off. coarse plastic + heat = no no for stickers

but yeh, the iceman resists heat like no other. oh yeh, i was touching the k&n typhoon thing at kragens, it feels like the same plastic as the iceman, but they closed the opening and ending so i couldnt check if it was the same thickness.

The only time you will get heat soak off an intake is when you're idling in traffic, otherwise the amount of airflow through the piping is fast enough that there is no time for it to heat up. Pulling hot engine bay air is the only problem with aftermarket intakes. I personally think a short ram performs quite well on the Prelude since it's shielded on three sides (strut tower, battery, headlight, plus the hood is a close fit over the filter as well). I use a big chamber intake and it's the best that I've had.

NotoriousSH has an awesome intake right there. from all the concepts and theories i've heard including the big chambers, his probably would be the best or second to it.

I really like the idea of the type s intake with a k&n cone filter....I have heard great things about the type s and adding a very high flow filter(compaired to the stock filter) should help it even more(or it might hurt performance?)

Taking the airbox off my type-s intake gained 5hp across the board on the dyno... If you find a way to securely attach a large cone filer to the end of it, let me know.

^ I don't actually have the type s intake. I just like to think in the form of typing.
I got the idea a long time ago when a guy I knew did something like that with his Type R integra (he removed the top portion of the intake box and have a cone filter, he told me it was a stock filter. But I did some searching and I think that it was aftermarket)

^this is most likely what he had...
*edit pic too big*

The tough thing with the type-s inlet is that it is a huge oval, not a circle.

I made it from a JDM Topspeed intake and a generic short ram.

NotoriouSH, what did it cost to make that intake? I suppose I could hack my AEM SR and make a larger section towards the end. How did you figure out how much additional volume tubing to use to yield good results?

isn't his very similar to the AEM v2? why not just get that one for $100 when someone sells it on here...don't buy it new...just gotta be patient.

his intake does look pretty nice, tho. kudos for the 'crafstmanship.'
