Air Conditioning PSI

I went and bought a recharge kit for my 97 Prelude Base model. I followed the instructions on the kit ..saying to start the car and run for 5 min at full blast AC. Hook the dispenser w/o the coolant can and check the pressure on the gauge. NOW..I did that and the pressure actually read HIGH. So using the dispenser w/o the can of coolant I squeezed the trigger to allow some pressure out...cloud of freon (R134a) and oil came out...I kept bleeding it bit by bit and the pressure wouldn't get below 35psi. I then hooked up the recharge kit and pumped a little bit back in because I wanted to replace that oil that was lost.

Question is..why wouldn't the psi drop below 35psi? Is it just something that takes a long time to bleed off?

For one you shouldn't be releasing refrigerant in to the atmosphere!

Second, you could have a bad gauge or you could have put it on the high port instead of the low.

A low side pressure of ~35PSI is about where it should be.

With the a/c running, the low side pressure should be around 30-40 psi, and the
high side should be around 200-250 psi. These numbers depend on outside air
temp. and underhood temperatures. The hotter it is, the higher they will be to the
high end of these numbers.

Well, if it was a choice between a few lbs of refrigerant in the air vs. my compressor blowing out from overpressure ..which would have released all of it... I chose the lesser of two evils.

It was definitely hooked up on the low side and as for a bad gauge..I'll have someone else check it with another gauge.
